Assistant Accountant – Fundraising (Hybrid)
Woking | Permanent | Hybrid (2 days office / 3 days remote)
£30,000–£38,000 + bonus & benefits
Growing business with purpose
Are you an Assistant Accountant who enjoys variety and wants to be part of a collaborative team where your work genuinely matters?
We're supporting a growing fundraising organisation (working closely with a major UK charity) to hire an Assistant Accountant into a hands-on finance team. This is a role with real breadth — combining transactional finance, VAT, expenses, reconciliations and payroll support across multiple entities, in a fast-paced but supportive environment.
You'll join a tight-knit team where people roll up their sleeves to hit deadlines together, and where accuracy, ownership and teamwork are valued.
What we're looking for
Solid experience in transactional finance / bookkeeping
Comfortable working across multiple entities and juggling priorities
Highly detail-focused, proactive, and happy to pitch in
Confident communicator (email + phone) — supporting colleagues in the field when needed
Strong Excel skills (comfortable with formulas; lookups are a plus)
The role
Support the 4-weekly finance cycle including payroll and period close activity
Process and post transactions in Xero and maintain accurate ledgers
Review and export weekly employee expenses (high volume, mainly mileage) using Pleo
Support payroll processing (BrightPay) including:
RTI submissions
Pension file uploads
New starter/leaver admin support
Chasing missing P45s where required
Assist with VAT processes (including careful treatment and invoice chasing)
Process supplier invoices and support payment runs
Support reconciliations and period-end tasks / reporting
Your profile
Experience in bookkeeping / transactional finance within a small-to-mid size environment (practice background welcomed)
Confident with debits/credits and maintaining a clean nominal ledger
Good working knowledge of VAT (and confident asking the right questions)
Comfortable with Excel and working across systems
Experience with Xero (or similar) is preferred
Payroll experience is beneficial, but not essential if your bookkeeping/VAT fundamentals are strong
Salary & benefits
£30,000–£38,000 + bonus
Permanent, full-time
Hybrid working: typically 2 days in the Woking office / 3 days remote (more office-based initially for training)
36 days holiday (including bank holidays)
Enhanced pension & private medical (post-probation)
