Specialist Doctor in Acute Medicine

This is an exciting opportunity to join a large, dynamic and forward‑thinking Acute Medicine service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
Responsibilities
The Specialist Doctor in Acute Medicine will provide senior clinical leadership in the assessment, diagnosis and management of adult patients presenting with acute medical conditions. The post‑holder will work across the Acute Medicine Unit (AMU) and the Urgent Medical Assessment Centre (UMAC/SDEC), contributing to consultant‑led ward rounds, acute admissions, post‑take reviews, and Same Day Emergency Care activity. This includes timely senior decision‑making to support patient flow, safe discharge, and appropriate escalation of care.
The role involves close collaboration with consultants, resident doctors, Advanced Nurse Practitioners, nursing teams, and specialty colleagues to ensure high standards of clinical care. The post‑holder will supervise and support junior medical staff, participate in structured hand‑overs, and contribute to weekend and evening rota commitments as required.
In addition to direct clinical care, the Specialist Doctor will participate in teaching, clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement activities. There will be opportunities to support service development within Acute Medicine and to contribute to educational supervision, multidisciplinary training, and ongoing transformation of the Acute Medicine service.
Qualifications and Training
* MRCP (UK) or equivalent
* Full GMC registration with licence to practise
* At least 12 years’ postgraduate experience, including a minimum of 6 years in Acute/General Medicine (per national Specialist Doctor grade requirements)
* MD, PhD or other higher postgraduate qualification
* Evidence of further subspecialty training or accreditation (e.g. ultrasound, education, leadership)
Experience
* Substantial senior‑level experience in the management of acute medical admissions
* Wide‑ranging knowledge of General Internal Medicine
* Significant period of experience on an Acute Medical Unit or Same Day Emergency Care environment
* Experience supervising resident doctors and working in multidisciplinary teams
* Experience in critical care or high dependency unit management
* Previous involvement in service development or pathway redesign
Clinical Skills
* Competency in common emergency procedures (e.g. NIV, chest drain insertion, central line insertion, lumbar puncture)
* Ability to independently assess and manage acutely unwell patients
* Experience in point‑of‑care ultrasound (FAMUS/FUSIC) or echocardiography
* Completion of ALS/ACLS instructor training

* Recognised teaching qualification (PGCertMedEd or equivalent)
