Alongside several consortium partners, Balfour Beatty has been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first‑of‑a‑kind fully integrated gas‑fired power station with carbon capture and storage—key to making Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster. Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic senior electrical estimator to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
Responsibilities
What you’ll be doing:Responsible for pricing change, capturing operational risks and ensuring accurate and effective delivery of estimating services during project execution and in compliance with contract requirements by implementing estimating strategies.
* Work as a senior figure in the estimating team, managing workload and resource allocation within assigned bid teams; take on the role of estimator when required.
* Contribute to meeting the customer’s cost forecasting and reporting requirements within the agreed contract formats.
* Oversee and interrogate design options and value solutions, identifying project attractiveness based on sound estimating principles.
o Review drawings and specifications to prepare accurate cost sheets for materials, labour, and equipment.
o Ensure compliance with Balfour Beatty procedures, including the pre‑construction gate process.
o Review contract submission requirements, ensuring all financial information is identified, provided, and compliant.
o Establish and agree key plant rates.
o Agree with engineering and planning on key methods, outputs, and plant selection.
o Conduct detailed analysis of subcontractor estimates.
o Manage and coordinate preliminary and general expense pricing, plant schedules, and risk assessment.
o Prepare settlement papers and carry out any required adjustments.
o Sign off on all cost elements before financial submissions.
o Collaborate with suitable subcontractors and specialists to update cost forecasts and reports.
o Ensure key specialists are utilised on each bid to optimise design, specification, programme, and value.
o Produce cost information and submissions for senior management.
o Provide considered responses to customer queries, including post‑tender questions.
o Ensure the commercial team receives an effective handover of bid documentation.
o Manage customer contact, present proposals, and contribute to customer meetings during the project.
o Lead the development and implementation of appropriate digital toolsets for cost take‑off and estimating activities, such as 5D cost planning.
o Ensure cost planning and estimating are accurate and reflect project requirements and risk profile.
o Mentor estimators and bid teams with commercial and technical advice.
o Carry out measurement and take‑offs, pricing, and data entry.
o Live the Balfour Beatty Values.
o Maintain a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
o Support the delivery of Balfour Beatty Sustainability activities.
o Monitor performance and quality of selected Cost Consultants, validating outputs such as Bills of Quantities.
o Contribute to continuous improvement on bids, including presentation media and strategy papers for senior management.
Qualifications
* Detailed knowledge of electrical services, including HV/LV & instrumentation.
* Experience tendering projects in petrochemical, nuclear, or regulated environments.
* Experience with NAECI Labour agreements.
* Experience pricing and developing customer MTOs.
* Proven record managing the estimating process within the construction industry.
* Membership or relevant qualification from a professional body (RICS, CIOB, RIBA, ICE, CIBSE) desirable.
* Working knowledge of best‑practice solutions, innovative ideas, Lean Construction principles, and 5D cost planning.
* Understanding of BIM and ability to read and assemble BIM models to produce reports.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to build effective relationships under time pressure.
* Leadership experience desirable; team player with independent initiative.
* Proficiency in IT, numeracy, MS Office basic, and estimating systems.
* Passion for work, proactive problem solving, and a drive to exceed expectations.
