Job overview

The successful candidate will work closely with Cellular Pathology management team and the Consultant Pathologists to deliver a quality-driven, safe, cost effective, timely, responsive and customer focused Cellular Pathology service.

This Senior Biomedical Scientist post offers an exciting opportunity for BMS’s to further develop their specialist knowledge and skills in Diagnostic Cytology and Histopathology as we are an IBMS registered training facility committed to education, training and clinical excellence.


Main duties of the job

You will be required to attend Rapid on-site assessment clinics across the Trust hospitals and will need to have experience in cytology preparation and sample assessment.

You will also be responsible for supervising the Cellular Pathology area and assist in the development of staff within a progressive department where participation in developing our service is actively encouraged.

You should be HCPC registered with an appropriate MSc, IBMS HSD and/or be FIBMS and be well versed in the workings of a Cellular Pathology laboratory and in particular be able to demonstrate experience in Diagnostic Cytology both sample preparation and assessment.

You will also need to be enthusiastic, communicate well with all levels of staff and patients. Be highly motivated, computer literate and familiar with working to UKAS standards.

Qualifications

* • MSc/HSD/Fellowship of the Institute of Biomedical Science
* • HCPC registration as Biomedical Scientist
* • Evidence of on-going CPD


Experience

* Developed wide-ranging knowledge of diagnostic cytology experience and practice underpinned by theoretical and practical experience.
* Developed wide-ranging knowledge of Histology and practice underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
* Previous experience as a HCPC professional within the laboratory discipline
* To have knowledge of quality and clinical audit, administration and development of cellular pathology service
* Previous experience as a HCPC professional within the laboratory discipline
* Dissection of category B, C and D histology specimens
* Previous supervisory experience in a related field
* Experience at assisting in ROSE clinics


Knowledge

* Developed wide-ranging knowledge of diagnostic cytology, to include applications of ROSE clinics, underpinned by theoretical and practical experience
* Developed wide-ranging knowledge of diagnostic Histology and practice underpinned by theoretical and practical experience.
* Understanding and experience of quality management processes particularly in relation to UKAS standards
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Knowledge of digital pathology platforms, use of AI in histology and other automated equipment and processes


Skills

* Able to master complex facts, reach appropriate conclusions and recommend relevant responses.
* Able to implement policies and procedures within the constraints set by the laboratory, Trust and other regulating and professional bodies.
* Able to supervise, manage and lead staff and encourage a team culture.
* Able to confidentiality use computerised systems including the laboratory LIMs and various PC office applications.
* Be organised and plan own team’s work.
* Ability to maintain accuracy and efficient working practices and concentrate for prolonged periods.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Good understanding and practical knowledge of acceptance testing.

Disclosure & Barring Check Fee

Where your role requires a DBS check, the Trust will pay the fee upfront and reclaim the cost (including a £5 admin fee) from your first month’s salary. Volunteers are exempt.
