HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) is responsible for the administration of criminal, civil and family courts and tribunals in England and Wales. Your role
This is a multi‑jurisdictional site, and the successful candidate will work in both Civil and Family disciplines.
Civil Operational Support Officers assist with the creation and management of County Court claims which involves accounting for court fees, dealing with correspondence from court users and liaising with judges regarding the listing and hearing of cases. You will deal with enquiries from service users via post, email, telephone and face‑to‑face. Types of claim we deal with:
* Possessions
* Road Traffic Accidents
* Insolvency
* Credit card debt
* Loan debt
* Hire purchase debt
Family Operational Support Officers are responsible for the management of digital files in preparation for family hearings, often involving sensitive and challenging cases, assisting the judiciary in their remote hearings and drafting of their orders made in court. You will handle queries from court users via post, email, telephone and face‑to‑face with empathy and understanding and undertake a variety of administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of family hearings.
You will be assigned to teams to carry out a variety of general administrative duties to progress cases through the court system or provide support to other functions within HMCTS.
Your skills and experience
With a friendly and approachable manner, you’ll have excellent attention to detail and good written and verbal communication skills. You have a desire to deliver proactive and effective support to customers by phone and email. You’ll be skilled in organising your time, prioritising efficiently, able to multi‑task and adapt to using various software packages. You’ll enjoy working in a busy environment and helping court users navigate the justice system.

These operational roles are customer facing, requiring successful applicants to be office‑based to provide HMCTS services to the public.
Standard full‑time working hours are 37 hours per week (Monday to Friday). HMCTS welcomes part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns, where they meet the demands of the role and business needs and are agreed prior to appointment. All applications for part‑time, flexible and job‑sharing working patterns will be considered in accordance with the MoJ’s Flexible Working policy.
Applications for part‑time working would be considered however due to the nature of the role the minimum hours would be 35 hours per week over 5 days, 7 hours per day.
Location
Although the location is listed as Workington Magistrates’ Court, the post is based within the Civil and Family jurisdiction. Workington operates as a combined court centre.
Skilled Worker Visa
This role is not eligible for new Skilled Worker visas in accordance with the current immigration rules.
From 22 July 2025, the Government introduced changes to the Skilled Worker visa route.
