Fixed Term 2 Years (Apprenticeship)

Full Time 37 hours per week

Salary:

1. Advanced Level: Grade A (£24,796 per annum)
2. Higher Level: Grade C (£25,989 - £26,403 per annum)


Job purpose
This role is to fulfil the duties required to be undertaken as a Advanced or Higher Level Apprentice (Civil Engineer) and to support the work of a wider Civil Engineering team. The post holder will demonstrate the drive and initiative to work in an independent and flexible manner, with the ability to work with minimal supervision.

The main purpose of the job is to assist in the design, preparation, supervision and management of highways and structures improvement, maintenance schemes and other engineering projects and support the Asset Management and Traffic Management teams, in accordance with the County Council’s policies and programmes.

These posts support the Climate Change, Environment and Transport directorate.

Main duties and responsibilities

3. Assist with the design, implementation and maintenance of highway and bridge-related schemes and other engineering projects, including the preparation of contract drawings and bills of quantities, under supervision.
4. Assist with the preparation of reports, studies and estimates.
5. Assist with surveys, inspections and investigations for highway improvement and maintenance schemes and other engineering projects. Such as Traffic Regulation Orders and preventative maintenance schemes.
6. Assist with monitoring contractors’ site activities as directed by more experienced staff.
7. Undertake duties in accordance with Directorate Health and Safety policies.


The available posts are within:

Highway Traffic Management (three posts) – Where you will move on a rotation through the Asset Management and Traffic Management teams, giving you real hands‑on experience. You’ll help look after roads, footways, signs and road markings, support planned highway works, and be part of a team that responds quickly to emergencies like storms to keep people moving safely.

Engineering Design Group (one post) – Where you will design and deliver infrastructure projects across the County from Highway schemes to cycling and walking improvements.

Bridges and Structures (one post) – Where you will design and deliver Bridge and Structures projects across the county including inspections, asset maintenance, rockfall management, new bridges and retaining walls.

12. Ability to write technical letters and emails


Minimum of 5 GCSE’s with a grade C/4 or above in English and Science and a grade B/6 or above in maths (or equivalent).

Alternatively, on the higher-level 4 programme ideally you will already have a level 3 qualification in Civil Engineering or 3 A levels grades A-C including maths (or equivalent).
