Brief Description
You'll help keep our nation moving every single day.
A critical part of the work we do is the daily upkeep of the rail network. As an operative, you'll work outdoors in a small team, supporting essential maintenance to keep the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users.
Our operative community comes from a variety of backgrounds, and this might be the first time you've considered a career in rail. We're focused on your transferable skills and behaviors, and if you can demonstrate that, we will provide all necessary training to ensure you work safely and competently on the network.
If you succeed, you'll have a rewarding and fulfilling career with a company that recently joined the top 50 in Glassdoor's 2021 Best Places to Work.
Please Note: If successful, there may be a requirement to work on call in this role.
About The Role (External)
Operatives can specialize in various disciplines, but for this role, you'll become a specialist in Track. You'll be responsible for maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the track network (also known as the Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. This is a manual role involving working with rails, sleepers, ballast, drainage, and ancillary structures.
Our operatives work outdoors in all conditions, day or night. You'll be involved in demanding manual work, often transporting equipment across challenging terrain. Safety, respect for rules, and teamwork are critical, as you'll often work near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team
You are the team’s first and last line of support—checking equipment, driving between sites, supporting maintenance, and ensuring safety through lookout duties.
You matter to us
Your commitment to self-development is vital. We provide comprehensive training to develop your technical and non-technical skills. If you're transitioning from another industry, our structured training will prepare you for a rewarding career in rail, with clear progression pathways.
Your Skills Matter
While rail experience isn't mandatory, demonstrating the following transferable skills is essential:
* Team-working: Collaborate effectively with your team.
* Communication: Communicate clearly to work safely and efficiently.
* Proactive planning: Be punctual, prepared, and anticipate team needs.
* Working under pressure: Remain calm in outdoor conditions and near moving trains.
* Following rules and instructions: Respect safety protocols and challenge unsafe situations.
* Willingness to learn: Continuously develop your skills and stay updated with standards and procedures.
It matters that this is the right role for you
Additional considerations:
* Shifts: Includes days, nights, and weekends.
* Outdoor working: Comfortable working in various weather conditions.
* Safe working: Subject to drug/alcohol testing and medical checks, including hearing and eyesight exams.
* Driving: Must have a Category B driving license for Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute: Within 60 minutes of the location.
