Overview
At GE Aerospace we design, manufacture, repair and overhaul a range of propeller systems for Military and Civil applications from our facility in Gloucestershire, UK. In this role you will lead the Composite Production Manufacturing Engineering team, providing technical specialism, advanced problem solving and process expertise to support the production team in the ongoing manufacture of carbon composite Dowty Propellor Systems. The role focuses on evolving manufacturing processes, reducing defects and delivering faster, higher quality products, with a leadership style that motivates and engages the team to achieve month-on-month and year-on-year improvements. You will navigate regulatory requirements, comply with internal procedures and work with a broad range of stakeholders to support shop floor activities while pursuing longer-term transformational improvements.
Responsibilities
* Become a key figure in the manufacturing environment with deep expertise in carbon composite and resin transfer molding processes.
* Lead and support a growing team of carbon composite manufacturing engineers.
* Champion and, where appropriate, lead root cause analysis across the manufacturing landscape with data-driven solutions guided by structured problem solving methodologies (Six Sigma, Red X, 8D, Lean).
* Develop production techniques from raw material to finished product, placing Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, Inventory & Productivity (SQDCIP) at the centre of decisions.
* Review and approve clear and concise manufacturing work instructions aligned with technical specifications.
* Provide training and support to manufacturing operatives for changes in work instructions and techniques.
* Establish control plans and data collection to monitor, gate and analyze critical input variables at defined control points.
* Embed a culture of Statistical Process Control across manufacturing and provide the equipment, systems and procedures to enable this.
* Be a key signatory and approver for business procedures and documentation.
* Contribute to year-on-year improvements in metrics such as Throughput, Yield, Cycle Time and Defects-Per-Unit.
* Stay informed on changes in aviation and propulsion industries and regulatory requirements (CAA, EASA, FAA, etc.).
* Represent the Mechanical Engineering team in wider forums.
Qualifications/Requirements
* Demonstrable, deep expertise in carbon composite manufacture, resin transfer molding and NDT techniques; knowledge of common defect types.
* BSc/MSc/HND (or Level 6 equivalent) in a technical discipline or equivalent experience.
* Experience in a manufacturing or engineering function.
* Understanding of engineering statistics (Process Capability, Hypothesis Testing, Design-of-Experiments, Statistical Process Control).
* Ability to influence across the organisation with a data-driven approach.
* Pragmatic, positive approach to manufacturing improvements.
* Experience of configuration control in a highly regulated industry.
Desired Skills
* Experience within a tightly regulated industry, preferably aviation.
* Knowledge of robotics, automation and controls installation and commissioning.
* Broad experience in a variety of manufacturing and engineering roles focused on product creation and delivery.
* Specialism in propulsion and propeller manufacture.
* Experience in facility design, commissioning and technical specification in automated environments (valued).
* Experience with CAD tools (3D Catia, 2D AutoCAD) and/or other CAD packages.
* Knowledge of 3D printing from CAD to part production.
