Northumberland County Council - Education Welfare Officer

Northumberland County Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Education Welfare Officer to improve pupil attendance and promote the welfare, development, and protection of children across Northumberland. The successful candidate will contribute to fulfilling the extended duties for Virtual School Headteachers to support the education of children with social workers.

Education Welfare operates within the Virtual School, ensuring the Local Authority's statutory duties and responsibilities related to safeguarding children—such as school attendance, elective home education, children missing education, child employment, and performance licensing—are carried out to the highest standards.

The role involves working in partnership with children, parents, schools, alternative providers, and other professionals to maximize educational opportunities for pupils. Additionally, the post includes supporting schools at a whole-school level to improve attendance policies and practices.

Applicants should have a good general education and preferably hold a recognized professional qualification in social work, teaching, childcare, nursing, youth and community work, or psychology. Experience in an education or social care setting and knowledge of current legislation are essential.

For more information, please see the attached job description and person specification. For inquiries, contact Sarah Wintringham, Principal Education Welfare Officer, at 07584273772.
