About the Role

Leeds City College are looking for an inspiring Education and Early Years Assessor who has a passion for supporting and motivating young people into employment, whether this is in Primary Education or Early Years. The ideal candidate will be passionate about students, can work independently, and make productive and professional relationships with our work placement settings.

The role will work closely with the Education and Early Years team to support students to achieve their workplace assessments and qualifications. You will primarily be based at Quarry Hill Campus but will also be required to travel to a variety of education and early years settings in West Yorkshire. During these visits, you will carry out and write up detailed student observations, therefore you must have a high level of written literacy.

You will be joining a substantial department of over 25 staff members dedicated to supporting approximately 600 students. This is a hybrid role, which involves assessing students both in college and on work placement. You will be fully integrated into the departmental team, benefiting from a structured support network that includes professional support, departmental collaboration, and shared expertise.

The Department of Education and Early Years is based at Quarry Hill Campus within the Cultural Quarter of Leeds. Quarry Hill Campus boasts specialist childcare training resources, multi-sensory provision, food technology suites, digital technology labs, state of the art hospitality equipment, and industry-standard studios and theatres. Quarry Hill Campus is a fantastic place for both study and work, with learners who thrive in an environment where staff promote high challenge and offer generous support.

Please refer to the person specification in the job description for more information about what we are looking for and address this in your supporting statement within your application form.

Please note, this is a part-time (30 hours) role.

What You Will Do

1. Manage a caseload of students, ensuring they meet professional competencies through high-quality assessment, marking, and placement support. You will play a pivotal role in transitioning students into qualified Early Years Practitioners or Teaching Assistants.
2. Plan and carry out holistic work placement assessments against nationally recognised standards and competencies, mark and provide feedback on student work, and map evidence from observations & written work directly to the specific competencies and learning outcomes of the qualification.

3. Formulate bespoke Action Plans with individual students to prepare them for observations, address any developmental gaps, and conduct regular progress reviews to ensure students remain on track for timely achievement.

4. Mentor students to bridge the gap between classroom theory and practical application in a workplace setting.

5. Maintain accurate assessment records using a variety of evidence (e.g., witness testimonies, professional discussions, and observation records).

6. Prepare student work for Internal and External Quality Assurance (IQA/EQA) moderation by NCFE CACHE, ensuring 100% compliance with awarding body regulations.

7. Ensure all marking and assessment decisions are fair, valid, and consistent with college and national benchmarks, and the awarding body.

8. Show high levels of autonomy in scheduling appointments, coordinating with placement supervisors, and managing your own administrative calendar to meet key deadlines.

About You

9. An excellent communicator, confident in building engaging learning relationships that motivate students to achieve their full potential.

10. Able to communicate effectively and professionally with a wide range of employers and work placement teams to advocate for student progress.

11. Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the professional roles within Early Years and Teaching Assistant sectors.

12. A genuine passion for inspiring and motivating young people to become the next generation of the education and childcare workforce.

13. Highly self-motivated with the ability to work independently and use your own initiative across various settings, including work placements, remote working, and college-based days.

14. Ability to be adaptable and flexible in your approach to meet the diverse needs of different learners, ensuring an inclusive assessment experience.

15. Proficient in using technology to upload, track, and record student progress accurately (e.g., e-portfolios).

16. Strong administrative skills to ensure all marking and evidence meet the high standards required for NCFE CACHE moderation.
