A Research Associate position is available to undertake research in a UKRI/EPSRC funded research project to investigate the development of terahertz (THz) spintronic emitters as strong sources of THz radiation for supporting the switching of nanoscale magnetic bits, at THz timescales. The work is experimental in nature and focuses on development of future storage technologies offering low energy, but high speed switching.
The project is joint between researchers at the Universities of Manchester and Lancaster. At Manchester, the work continues a successful collaboration on spintronic emitters by members of the Nano Engineering & Spintronic Technologies (NEST) research group1 and the Terahertz Physics research group in the Photon Science Institute2, in the Faculty of Science & Engineering. The work will make use of the extensive range of facilities available in the Manchester nanofabrication facilities at the National Graphene Institute and the Photon Science Institute.
You will hold or about to obtain a PhD or equivalent in Physics, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a relevant discipline. You must have hands-on experimental experience and skills in thin-film fabrication, nanoscale patterning and characterisation. Some knowledge of THz time-domain spectroscopy employing ultrafast lasers would be beneficial, but not essential. You should have a desire to pass on skills and knowledge to PhD/MSc/MPhys students.
