IT Compliance Controls Specialist

Locations: Birmingham, Bristol or London – 3 days a week onsite.
This role is crucial for ensuring the effectiveness of IT controls within the organisation, supporting compliance and risk management frameworks. By testing and validating IT general controls, change management, and access management processes, you will contribute to the overall assurance of IT systems and applications.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Conduct audits and tests of IT general controls, assessing risks related to IT processes such as change management and access management.
* Ensure that applications are appropriately integrated into the control framework.
* Collaborate with various teams to identify control gaps, recommend improvements, and support ongoing compliance with internal policies and industry standards.
* Engage with business units and deliver actionable insights through strong stakeholder management and communication skills.
Responsibilities
* Provide first‑line assurance that IT controls are designed, implemented, and operated effectively to meet UK Corporate Governance Code and India Companies Act obligations.
* Guide control operators, owners, and compliance leads on current control requirements and ensure understanding and compliance.
* Ensure operational teams have robust plans to address control deficiencies, evaluate the impact of ineffective controls, and maintain evidence for audit purposes.
* Drive business value by simplifying processes to increase control effectiveness and reduce commercial exposure from non‑compliance.
* Interface with IT operational teams, 2nd Line of Defence, external auditors, and customer audit representatives.
* Support senior managers in the Risk and Compliance team and work as part of a small team of ICOFR controls and assurance specialists.
* Support application onboarding, perform control design and implementation, test preparation, and maintain a health dashboard for applications and ICOFR controls to inform decision making.
Skills and Experiences
Essential
* Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Risk Management or a related field.
* Proven experience in audit, IT controls testing, compliance, or risk management.
* Strong knowledge of IT general controls, change management, access management, and ITIL service management processes.
* Familiarity with frameworks such as COBIT, ISF or equivalent, and certifications like CISA, CISSP or similar are highly desirable.
* Excellent analytical, problem‑solving, and stakeholder management skills.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage with diverse teams and manage relationships.
Desirable
* Cloud experience including certifications.
* Experience working in a similar scale enterprise‑size business to BT.
* Understanding of the Telco sector.
