The Macmillan Information and Support Service Cancer SupportWorker will provide personalised information and support about cancer andcancer services, to enable people to navigate the health and social care systemand to make choices that are best for their health and life. They will provideinformation and support within their competencies and refer on to appropriateservices where the needs of the patient are more complex. They will support theMCISS manager where required in supporting and guiding volunteers and supportthe provision of a high quality MCISS.
The post holder will:
* Meet with users of the service to support access to highquality information and support in relation to cancer. This will includeassessment of service users information and support needs, provision of verbaland written information, supportive listening, personalised care plandevelopment and signposting to available services.
* Be required to help co-ordinate and support volunteerswithin the service.
* Manage own workload with the varying demands of the service
* To contribute to the delivery and development of a Trustwide patient service providing cover for the Macmillan Information and SupportService Manager (with appropriate supervision and support) during periods ofannual leave and absence
* Support the day to day running of the service.
Main duties of the job
* Coordinate care by assessing the needs of the individualsattending/contacting the service and identify the required level ofintervention.
* To provide general information and support about cancer andcancer services, to enable people to navigate the health and social care systemand make choices that are best for their cancer and their life. A key aspect ofthe role will involve daily and direct (e.g face to face and telephone)communication with patients, relatives, carers and other health and social careprofessionals. The information required is sensitive due to the nature ofcancer. Communication in this context requires a high degree of empathy,understanding, diplomacy, honesty and integrity.
* Triage incoming calls, using a risk assessment framework andinitiate appropriate response according to protocols and individual pathways,using good communication skills, basic clinical awareness and appropriate toolsand procedures, liaising as appropriate when non routine and refer complexdecisions to the appropriate team for assessment and review
* Provide basic telephone advice and refer on or sign-post toother sources of support
* Demonstrate the ability to recognise and respondappropriately when faced with a sudden deterioration alerting the appropriateteam or enabling rapid response as appropriate
* Support information delivery, this may include signpostingto appropriate needs related information.
* Guide people through the use of self-assessment resources

Experience
* Experience of multi-professional working
* Experience in the use of data management
* Relevant health or social care experience at AFC Band 3 or equivalent
* Experience of coaching/teaching patients/carers
* Experience in coordinating a patient workload
* Awareness of Improving Outcomes: A Strategy for Cancer and other national cancer policies
Qualifications
* GCSE English Language and Mathmatics (Grades A-C) or equivalent
* NVQ 4 or NVQ 3 plus additional equivalent through short courses/relevant experience
* Evidence of continual role development
* Willingness to undertake Macmillan learning and development courses
* Coaching or teaching qualification
Knowledge
* Evidence of good communication skills
* Understanding of patient centred care
* Understanding of the health and social care environment
* Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and its role across the UK
* Knowledge of relevant cancer treatments, interventions and terminology
