NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is one of the largest healthcare systems in the UK, employing around 40,000 staff across various clinical and non-clinical roles. We provide acute hospital, primary, community, and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million, extending to 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

We are seeking Specialist Biomedical Scientists (SBMS) in Microbiology responsible for diagnosing infections and determining appropriate anti-infective therapies through advanced microbiological methods. The role involves performing duties to ensure an efficient microbiology service, supervising and mentoring less experienced staff, and providing expert advice and guidance on microbiological analyses.

The Diagnostic Clinical Microbiology/Virology Service for NHS Glasgow and Clyde operates from Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, offering comprehensive Microbiology/Virology services to hospital, general practice, private sector, and academic users.

Applicants should hold an I.B.M.S. accredited BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences, be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist, and have or be willing to attain the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology. The role is based at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary microbiology laboratory, equipped with advanced microbiology technology, processing approximately 400,000 specimens annually, and holding UKAS accreditation for ISO 15189 and ISO 17025 standards.

The post involves participating in a 24/7 out-of-hours rota, working 37.5 hours over 7 days, including evenings, weekends, public holidays, and emergency on-call duties between 8 pm and 8 am.
