Practitioner Psychologist/Psychological Therapist/Psychotherapist

We are pleased to be recruiting to this 0.6 wte 8b post to work within our multi-modality therapy team in secondary care for adults with moderate-severe mood, anxiety and personality disorders. The post holder will be an expert clinician for service users with PTSD and complex PTSD offering trauma-focussed CBT and EMDR, as well as supervising and line managing junior psychologists, offering consultation and link-working with colleagues.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will demonstrate experience and expertise in working with PTSD and cPTSD with adults in secondary care with moderate-severe presentations, using trauma-focussed CBT and EMDR. The role requires experience and skills in supervising and line managing more junior psychologists. The post holder will have experience in leading and implementing service audits and development projects, teaching and consultation.


About us

The post holder will work alongside other Clinical/Counselling Psychologists delivering assessment and therapy, with some of the staff also employed in specialist trauma posts. They will also work alongside psychotherapists offering Cognitive Analytic Therapy and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy as part of this well-established multi-modality team. There are line management and supervisory responsibilities, as well as link-working with CMHTs to provide consultation, teaching, co-working. The team is based in central Croydon (Jeanette Wallace House) and face-to-face sessions are provided at this base and at other Croydon sites. Wednesdays are an essential team day.Development opportunities: The Trust provides access to a wide range of CPD opportunities and all staff are encouraged to undertake development opportunities and activities relevant to their post. As a multi-modality team there are opportunities for learning and development alongside other modalities.


Job responsibilities

To develop, co-ordinate and ensure the systematic provision of a psychological therapy service to adults in secondary care with moderate to severe mood, anxiety and personality disorders and personally provide highly specialist clinical input, particularly for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

To contribute to enabling other staff, service users and carers from diverse backgrounds to flourish by working to create a psychologically safe environment.

To provide clinical supervision and consultation as appropriate, functioning as a lead specialist in Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

To ensure that systems are in place and working effectively for the clinical and professional supervision and support of other psychological practitioners.

To promote service evaluation, audit, research and policy development.

To work as an autonomous professional within registration body guidelines and codes of conduct and guided by principles and policies or procedures of the service, taking responsibility for interpreting policies within defined parameters.

To agree outcomes/results with clinical/professional lead and to decide how they are best achieved.

To support the coordination of staff support within their area, working closely with Corporate Psychology and Psychotherapy to support colleagues and ensure all staff in SLaM have access to evidence-based support. To participate, as a recipient, in staff support work when appropriate.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* To have undertaken a recognised qualification in one of the core mental health professions, e.g. psychiatric nursing, clinical or counselling psychology, medicine, social work and occupational therapy OR to have equivalent relevant experience and demonstrable competence to work in the mental health field in the NHS
* Entry-level qualification in applied psychological therapy/mental health/social welfare profession or equivalent and demonstrable practice in this field (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level/supervised practice/additional training) that has been accepted for the purposes of professional registration. For Psychologists:. Entry-level qualification in Applied Psychology (professional Doctorate, or combination of MSc plus PG Diploma level additional training) that has been accepted by the HCPC for purposes of professional registration. (A/I) For Family / Systemic Psychotherapists: Post-graduate qualification in relevant mental health/social welfare profession and demonstrable practice in this field PLUS Masters level qualification in Family and Systemic Psychotherapy or equivalent qualification, accredited by UKCP For Psychotherapists: Entry-level qualification in Psychotherapy that has been accepted by the APC/BPC/UKCP/BACP/BABCP (specify which, according to nature of post) for purposes of professional registration. (A/I) For Arts Therapists: Masters Degree (or equivalent) in Arts Therapy or Dance Movement Therapy. (or specify Art Therapy, Music Therapy, Dramatherapy or Dance Movement Therapy)
* Additional training beyond entry-level qualification in the following specialised area of psychological practice; trauma-focussed Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (tf-CBT), OR a combination of specialist short courses and/an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in this specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by a registered body and/or an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher.
* Additional training beyond entry-level qualification in the following specialised area of psychological practice: EMDR (parts I, II and III completed)
* Completed training course in clinical supervision and/or accredited to supervised qualified psychological practitioners in relevant discipline.
* Additional training beyond entry-level qualification in other specialised areas of psychological practice for the treatment of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, such as Narrative Exposure Therapy, OR a combination of specialist short courses and/an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice-based learning in this specialist area of clinical practice, assessed by a registered body and/or an experienced clinical supervisor to be of equal level to a Postgraduate Diploma or higher.
* Accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with the BABCP


Experience

* Evidence of having worked as a clinical specialist under supervision with adults in secondary care with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), complex PTSD and other moderate to severe mood, anxiety and personality disorder presentations using tf-CBT, EMDR, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.
* Experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of adult clients with a range of psychological needs of a complex nature in secondary care presenting with moderate to severe mood, anxiety and/or personality disorders.
* Experience of supervising and line managing qualified clinical and counselling psychologists, assistant psychologists and trainee clinical or counselling psychologists having completed the relevant training.
* Post-qualification experience that supports working with, and addressing issues of, diversity within local communities.
* Experience of working with interpreters during psychological assessment and treatment
* Experience of investigating informal or formal complaints about supervisees, or serious investigations on behalf of an NHS Trust
* Experience of working with refugees and asylum seekers


Knowledge

* Theoretical knowledge of psychopathology and the evidence base for the relevant treatment of PTSD, complex PTSD, mood, anxiety and personality disorders
* Advanced knowledge of the theory of psychological therapy and it's therapeutic application.
* Associated awareness of assessment and clinical psychometrics.
* Knowledge of legislation in relation to the client group and mental health issues, child and adult protection, and equalities.


Skills

* To communicate skilfully and sensitively complex and sensitive information with clients, carers and colleagues overcoming barriers to communication including sensory, and emotional difficulties, cultural differences and hostility to or rejection of information
* To plan and schedule assessment and interventions for individual clients and groups and carers (and for meetings such as CPA and case reviews where appropriate).
