This role can be filled by either an Education Mental Health Practitioner (EMHP) or a Children's Wellbeing Practitioner (CWP).

We are looking to recruit an EMHP or CWP to work within the Mental Health Support Teams at East Berkshire NHS Trust in Slough. The successful applicant will deliver evidence‑based early interventions for children and young people (CYP) across schools, communities and healthcare settings.


Main duties of the job

* Be trained and confident in the use of CYP IAPT principles, evidence‑based interventions and routine outcome measures.
* Co‑ordinate and manage a defined caseload of CYP presenting with emotional health and wellbeing difficulties in schools.
* Develop, deliver and evaluate individualised care packages/programmes for CYP and families, ensuring high standards of practice in line with national guidelines and trust policy.
* Provide day‑to‑day clinical and supervisory support for Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHP).
* Offer specialist mental health advice, consultation and outcome‑based triage referrals to schools.
* Train school staff, parents and carers in partnership with colleagues.
* Promote the whole‑school approach to developing and maintaining emotional health and well‑being within schools.
* Mentor students and less‑experienced team members.
* Act as an autonomous practitioner recognising own limitations and seeking support when required.
* Provide clinical supervision to the team.

Person Specification


Education/Qualifications/Training

* Pre‑January 2023: successful completion of a Health Education England Quality Assured EMHP training programme or Post‑January 2023: successful completion of a BPS‑accredited EMHP training programme.
* Register as an EMHP on the BPS Wider Psychological Workforce Register or on the BABCP.
* Relevant bachelor’s degree (e.g., psychology, mental health, sociology, education) graded at 2:2 or above.


Continuous Professional Development

* Commitment to ongoing training and development.
* Evidence of continuous professional development in child and adolescent mental health relevant to the post.


Previous Experience

* Experience working as a trainee or qualified Educational Mental Health Practitioner.
* Significant experience with CYP.
* Experience working in or with a diverse or multi‑cultural community.
* Experience delivering specific evidence‑based low‑intensity interventions to CYP and families.
* Experience in a service with agreed targets and demonstrated clinical outcomes.
* Experience liaising with a wide variety of agencies and stakeholders.
* Experience being supervised and utilising supervision in clinical practice.
* Experience working with looked‑after children or other vulnerable groups of CYP and in educational settings.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

* Knowledge of common mental health issues experienced by CYP and how they may present.
* Knowledge of evidence‑based low‑intensity interventions for CYP.
* Ability to work within educational settings to increase mental health awareness among staff.
* Knowledge of and ability to use routine outcome measures (ROMs) with CYP and families.
* Understanding of the importance of collecting feedback from service users and stakeholders for quality improvement.
* Ability to undertake comprehensive risk assessments within scope of practice.
* Knowledge of safeguarding issues and commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of CYP and vulnerable adults.
* Understanding of ethics and patient confidentiality in working with CYP.
* Ability to manage a sensitive and potentially emotionally distressing caseload.
* Excellent interpersonal, therapeutic and professional relationship‑building skills.
* Clear and effective communication with colleagues, CYP and families, respecting diversity.
* Ability to assist in assessment and observation activities related to individual health and wellbeing.
* Ability to analyse and synthesise multiple sources of information for formulation of service‑user difficulties and development of multi‑disciplinary care plans.
* Ability to plan and deliver psychologically informed interventions tailored to individual health and wellbeing needs.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills, including telephone and internet‑mediated communication.
* High standard of letter and report writing.
* Excellent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and online clinical tools.

* Respect for individual rights, autonomy and patient confidentiality.
* Ability to work flexibly as required (within and outside office hours).
* Ability to travel independently between locations (schools, NHS premises, service user homes).
* Fluency in a language other than English—state all languages available.
* Ability to work with interpreters to deliver services.
