About The Role
For informal enquiries, please contact Gihan Mudalige (Professor) g.mudalige@warwick.ac.uk
Applications are invited for a two-year Senior Research Fellow (High Performance Computing) position on the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership for the Virtual Exascale Calculations Transform Aviation (VECTA) project. VECTA is a consortium project with collaborators from Rolls-Royce plc, EPCC at the Universities of Edinburgh, Queen's University Belfast, Universities of Cambridge, Warwick and Surrey. The focus of this 5-year project will be on solving the complex system-level modelling challenges introduced by next-generation fuel propulsion.
About You
You will possess a PhD and have a strong background in developing parallel applications for High Performance Computing systems and will be able to contribute to the design, analysis, implementation, optimization and deployment of parallel algorithms and software for multi-core and many-core architectures on large-scale cluster systems. You should have excellent programming skills in C/C++ or FORTRAN and have demonstrable experience in writing and running parallel codes using MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, HIP or SYCL/OpenCL. You will also have interest in the design and development of compilers/translators/code-generation and/or AI/ML model development with good knowledge gained in these areas at least at undergraduate level. The ideal candidate would have excellent software development skills in relation to developing parallel numerical simulation software for HPC systems. The role requires an enthusiastic and task/goal oriented individual who will be able to communicate effectively and aim to deliver the VECTA goals.
For further information regarding the skills required for this role please see the personal specification section of the attached job description.
About The Department
The Warwick research contributions to the VECTA project will be led by Prof. Gihan Mudalige. Warwick will focus on enabling Exascale-capable turbomachinery simulations, including AI-accelerated convergence, performance portability across next-generation hardware and tight thermomechanical integration.
More specifically the challenges to be addressed in this project at Warwick will be:
* Exascale performance of the OP2 DSL including performance portability- OP2 has demonstrated its Petascale credentials with meshes of 5 billion cells on both CPUs and GPUs. In VECTA we will develop capability to simulate several hundred billion cells. Work will explore the use of mixed-precision with high-performance, specialised GPU cores/ novel hardware and novel algorithms based on implicit methods.
* Thermomechanical integration - Computing geometric properties of the mesh, such as edgeweights, is often a pre-processing step or a one-off calculation and the cost is amortised. With thermomechanical coupling, domains move and the CFD mesh changes in time. (Re)calculation of geometric quantities must therefore be fast. Similarly, extracting data for in-situ visualisation must be efficient. Both are an impediment to gaining best performance on Exascale systems, which this work will address.
* AI acceleration - We will investigate AI/ML techniques to speed-up CFD convergence. Areas of interest are ML directed local prediction and global filtering to predict and correct one engine revolution from its predecessor(s); or, to identify incipient indicators of emergent behaviour.
