Speech and Language Therapist

The Speech and Language Team (SaLT) work as part of a multi‑disciplinary team delivering high‑quality specialist services to individuals with Learning Disabilities. This role will work across Learning Disabilities to meet the communication and dysphagia needs of adults with a learning disability. You will be a person‑centred SaLT who is committed to advocating for and meeting the needs of adults with a learning disability.
Main duties of the job
You will provide specialist assessment to adults with speech, language and communication needs. You will act as an assessor, creating specialist speech and language therapy treatment plans, care plans and interventions that are co‑produced with the people you support. You will use evidence‑based practice to meet the person’s needs, with identified clinical effectiveness and outcome measures. You will support and supervise junior staff and students, and work autonomously and collaboratively within the multi‑disciplinary team. Your responsibilities include assessment, planning and implementing evidence‑based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using outcome measures, providing advice to other professionals regarding communication and dysphagia management, modifying materials, attending and contributing to MDT and clinical team meetings, report writing and completing relevant administrative tasks.
Qualifications
* Degree in Speech and Language Therapy or equivalent
* Current registered membership of HCPC and RCSLT
* Evidence of specialised continued professional development in speech and language therapy
* Evidence of meeting HCPC standards
* Management training
* Leadership training
* Post‑basic Dysphagia training
Experience
* Experience working with children, young people or adults with an Intellectual Disability and/or Autism with complex needs
* Experience delivering training on speech and language therapy related topics to patients, carers and colleagues
* Experience leading on service related projects
* Experience supervising junior staff and/or students
* Knowledge and application of different assessments and therapeutic approaches for communication needs in adults with Intellectual Disabilities and/or Autism
* Experience working with children, young people or adults with Autism, Mental Health and Behaviour Needs
* Evidence of clinical supervision of others
* Attendance at Clinical Excellence Networks relevant to the current role
* Attended Makaton training
* Attended training on communication strategies such as Talking Mats, Intensive Interaction, Communication Passports
* Experience of electronic communication aids e.g. iPad
Skills
* Highly developed clinical reasoning skills
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* High motivation and ability to engage with service users and carers to improve outcomes
* Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
* Knowledge of Learning Disabilities national agendas including NICE guidance and the Transforming Care agenda
* Knowledge of the Mental Capacity Act, best‑interest process and Deprivation of Liberty Guidance
