Primary Care Pharmacy Technician & Dispensary Manager
Job Context and Summary: This hybrid leadership and technical role within a progressive general practice setting supports high-quality, person-centred, coordinated care. It combines the clinical and technical responsibilities of a Primary Care Pharmacy Technician with the operational leadership of a Dispensary Manager, ensuring safe, effective, and efficient medicines use alongside smooth dispensary operations. Pharmacy technicians play a vital role within the primary care multidisciplinary team, supporting clinical pharmacists, GPs, nurses, practice staff, and community pharmacists. While they do not prescribe or make clinical decisions, they support medicine optimisation, improve repeat prescribing processes, and uphold dispensary standards. The post holder will lead improvements in prescribing, ensure compliance with NICE guidance and initiatives, manage the dispensary team and operations, and enhance patient outcomes through medicines management and operational leadership.
Key Responsibilities
1. Clinical Pharmacy Technician Duties
o Work under supervision of clinical pharmacists and GPs, following SOPs.
o Support medication reviews, medicines reconciliation, especially post-discharge, and medication synchronisation.
o Process repeat medication requests, switch medications per protocols, promote repeat dispensing and online ordering.
o Implement prescribing guidance, medicines optimisation initiatives, and local health strategies.
o Participate in structured medication reviews and shared care protocols.
o Assist in audits, clinical searches, and data analysis for prescribing safety and quality.
o Communicate medication changes to patients and liaise with community pharmacy and secondary care.
o Respond to medication queries from patients and staff.
o Support staff education on medicines optimisation.
o Contribute to medicines-related SOPs and practice policies, ensuring CQC compliance.
o Coordinate with pharmacies regarding stock issues and shortages.
2. Dispensary Management Responsibilities
o Staff Management & Leadership: Manage dispensary staff, conduct appraisals, support HR processes, and promote professional development. Act on behalf of the practice in operational decisions, including urgent HR and safety matters.
o Work closely with the Reception Team Lead to ensure smooth front-desk operations and effective communication.
3. Dispensary Operations
o Oversee prescription processing, endorsement checks, and returns.
o Maintain SOPs and ensure legal and regulatory compliance.
o Lead DSQS submissions and audits.
4. Stock Management & Purchasing
o Oversee stock ordering, delivery checks, and invoice reconciliation.
o Maintain stock levels, rotate stock, and dispose of expired items.
o Negotiate with pharmaceutical reps for discounts.
o Conduct stocktakes and financial reconciliation.
5. Technical and Administrative Support
o Maintain accurate medication records, ensuring security and compliance.
o Support data generation for audits, frameworks, and reports.
o Assist with practice reporting, communication, and system integration.
o Develop reports for decision-making and audit readiness.
o Support recall management, report generation, and research data collection.
