Chief Constables' Message
We really welcome your interest in joining our Police Force. It is a privilege to lead the teams in Surrey Police and Sussex Police who continuously work selflessly and tirelessly in order to keep people in our counties safe.
We are looking for talented and inspirational people who put the needs of the public at the heart of everything that they do and who want to make a difference. If you feel you are that person then we want to hear from you.
We wish you all the very best with your application.
Chief Constable Tim De Meyer & Chief Constable Jo Shiner
The Role & Key Responsibilities
Sussex Police’s ability to protect communities, catch criminals and deliver an outstanding service relies on the confidence of the public. Trust, transparency and integrity are fundamental to this; ensuring we are able to police by consent, deliver an effective policing approach and treat all people with fairness, respect and dignity.
Established in 2021 and held-bi monthly, our Ethics Committee helps us enhance the trust and confidence in both the ethical governance and actions of Sussex Police, internally and externally. With a commitment to promote equality and diversity across our organisation, and in the way we represent Sussex, the membership of the committee is formed of advisors recruited from different communities, ensuring we benefit from a diverse range of thought, backgrounds and experience that can support and challenge us to achieve more.
To support this, we are looking for an exceptional individual to join us as our Committee Chair; promoting the highest standards of ethical conduct and making a difference across our organisation and the communities we serve.
What you will be doing
As Chair to the Ethics Committee, you will hold a vitally important role for our force, at a time when public confidence in policing is particularly critical. You will provide effective scrutiny and challenge to the work that we deliver and the decisions we make.
Devoting up to 12 days per annum, for which you will be paid for in way of a day rate, you will lead a group of 15 – 20 committee members, identifying improvement opportunities which promote our core values of integrity, impartiality, public service and transparency. This includes acting as trusted advisors to decision makers on a wide range of issues which have a degree of ethical or moral dilemma. Examples of these questions include: Should police officers be allowed tattoos that cannot be covered? Should Artificial Intelligence be used to make policing more effective? Should names from misconduct hearings be published? Your advice on these matters will then be used to strengthen our policing approach; identifying and communicating best practice and learning on ethical issues within our force.
As Chair of the Ethics Committee you will play a vital role in supporting us, providing effective scrutiny and challenge to the work that we do and the decisions we make.
