University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW)

Senior Interventional Cardiology Fellow

The closing date is 23 February 2026

We seek to appoint a full‑time cardiology interventional fellow for 16 months. The role will expose you to the full range of coronary intervention at the Bristol Heart Institute, the regional centre for the Southwest. Our unit has one of the largest volume and highest quality complex PCI programmes in the UK and is recognised for excellence in intravascular imaging (both OCT and IVUS), both services being delivered by national and internationally regarded trainers.

We would welcome applications from candidates who have completed their SpR interventional cardiology training and are about to start looking for consultant‑grade positions (or equivalent). This post may involve an on‑call commitment at a 1 in 12 frequency if required by the department at the time of appointment; this will be confirmed at the time of interview/appointment. If not required, optional and ad hoc on‑call shifts may be booked and will be paid at the Trust agreed additional payment rates.

The contract will be held with the University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust.

Main duties of the job

The fellow can expect to perform around 200‑300 first‑operator cases per year and develop high‑level skills in adjunctive PCI tools such as IVUS, OCT, rotational atherectomy and lithoplasty as well as CTO PCI (AWE, ADR and retrograde). We have an active Impella programme. In addition to excellent clinical and procedural training, all fellows are expected to participate in departmental research and educational programmes, present at national and international conferences, and publish in peer‑reviewed journals.

Clinical

The post holder will be expected to deliver a minimum of 1 clinic a week and be able to independently manage their timetable alongside colleagues in the department.

Research

The successful applicant will support active interventional research studies, working closely with our research team to identify and enroll appropriate patients. Numerous opportunities to initiate and develop research streams and to publish are provided.

Educational

To develop an AV database of interventional cases, editing and archiving, using our Medinbox AV system.

Administration

The successful candidate will be expected to participate in the coordination and running of the heart team meetings and weekly educational meetings.
