Matron Specialist Palliative Care Services

Main Duties

This post provides strong leadership, visible, credible senior nursing presence accessible to staff, patients and their families for advice, assistance, and support. The post holder will be accountable for delivery of optimum quality patient care in their areas of responsibility, in line with the ten key matron responsibilities outlined nationally. The Matron for Specialist Palliative Care services will provide senior clinical and professional nursing leadership to a fully integrated NHS service based at the acute hospital site and managed within the Medical Division. Person Specification

* Essential – Education, Qualifications and Training
o First level registered nurse with Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Degree in Nursing and evidence of continuing professional development equivalent to post‑graduate diploma level.
o Development at Masters level or willingness to undertake study at masters level.
o Post‑registration qualification in Specialist Palliative Care.
o Teaching and assessing qualification.
* Desirable – Leadership qualification
* Essential – Experience, Knowledge and Skills
o Minimum two years in Senior Leadership (Band 7 or equivalent) position.
o Experienced in the field of Specialist Palliative Care.
o A proven track record in organisational leadership, leading change and service improvement.
o Contribution to strategic service planning (including workforce).
o Experience of change management and problem solving.
o Knowledge of NHS policy and practice.
o Understanding of speciality.
o A good understanding of and insight into NHS organisational culture.
o A sound understanding of nursing and therapy practice and practice development.
o A clear understanding of the Clinical Governance agenda and its role in assuring high quality, safe patient care.
o Children and adults safeguarding policies (including Prevent agenda).
o Leadership and motivation in the workplace.
o Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines, completing and finishing work on time.
o Facilitation and co‑ordination.

o Highly developed written communication and interpersonal skills.
o Verbal reasoning and presentation.
o Negotiation, problem solving, analytical & decision‑making skills.
