CPI has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Software Engineer to join its established and growing software team in Sedgefield. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise and leadership across medium to large-scale projects, contributing innovative solutions and will act as a trusted authority in embedded software development. You will play a key role in shaping technological innovations, supporting technology team strategy, and mentoring colleagues to reach their potential.

The Role

Key tasks in the role will include (but are not limited to the below), please download the job description for full details available on the CPI careers page:

1. Developing firmware and software applications for embedded microcontrollers, microprocessors, PCs, and mobile devices.
2. Collaborating with hardware teams to create block diagrams, IO tables, and user manuals.
3. Adhering to defined Software Development Procedures, applying version control, modular design, coding standards, and task management tools.
4. Participating in project scoping, planning, and technical reviews.
5. Interpreting client and product requirements, producing system designs and functional specifications.
6. Setting up, planning, and executing experimental work, analysing and reporting results.
7. Building and maintaining networks with external stakeholders, representing CPI as a credible expert.
8. Coaching, mentoring, and developing colleagues, fostering a culture of continuous capability development.

The person we are seeking

The successful candidate will be educated to a minimum of HNC or Foundation Degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering disicipline, have significant industrial experience at a senior level OR have a Degree/Master’s/PhD (or equivalent) in an engineering discipline with relevant industrial experience and;

9. Possess significant technical expertise in embedded software development and complex problem solving
10. Will exhibit professional mastery of software development principles and practices, with experience across the full lifecycle (prototype, design, implementation, debug, test, documentation) gained in academic or industrial environments
11. Have a working knowledge of low-power programming environments and tools (e.g. Keil/ IAR)
12. Have experience in bare-metal and RTOS programming using C/C++
13. Demonstrate familiarity with wireless communications (Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC, Bluetooth Low Energy, LoRaWAN)
14. Be able to demonstrate knowledge of low-level communications systems (I2C, SPI, CAN, RS-)

It would also be advantageous if the successful candidate had chartered status with a relevant professional institution (e.g. IET) and had;

15. Experience with safety-critical applications (ideally Medical Devices or SAMD)
16. Knowledge of radio protocols, FreeRTOS/ Zephyr, IoT/ cloud programming, or mobile/ web app development
17. Electronics design, MATLAB simulation, Python/ scripting, FPGA or Embedded Linux experience
18. Experience of the full range of software development from firmware to cloud computing would be useful, with a particular focus on app and cloud development and a good understanding of cloud data management and analysis
