Chief Internal Auditor Sefton, Merseyside, England Contract Our Client is seeking a dynamic Chief Internal Auditor to play a pivotal role in strengthening governance, risk management, and assurance across the organisation. The Role Reporting to the Head of Corporate Support, you will: Provide independent assurance and champion best practice in governance, risk management, and internal control. Lead and manage the Council's Internal Audit, Risk Management, Health & Safety, Insurance, and Emergency Planning functions. Develop and deliver strategies, policies, and plans to ensure services are effective, efficient, and compliant with legislation. Oversee the Corporate Risk Register and assurance framework. Provide evidence-based recommendations to improve governance and risk processes. Lead on fraud prevention and investigation, ensuring statutory and best practice compliance. Build strong relationships with senior leaders, Members, external auditors, and partners to support effective decision-making. Essential Skills & Experience: Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors ( CIIA ) or CCAB -qualified accountant with audit experience. Significant experience (5 years) managing complex audit/risk services. Strong knowledge of governance, risk, audit, and regulatory frameworks in public service organisations. Proven leadership in delivering audit and risk strategies within large or complex organisations. Excellent analytical, influencing, and problem-solving skills. Desirable: Experience within a Local Authority or similar public sector environment. Knowledge of Health & Safety, Insurance, Civil Contingencies legislation and frameworks.
