Overview

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust invites applications for a Consultant Community Paediatrician to join the Kaleidoscope Children's Centre in Lewisham. This newly created post offers an opportunity to lead within the communication clinic pathway, focusing on the assessment and diagnosis of social communication disorders in children under five. You will play a pivotal role in shaping early intervention and improving outcomes for young children and their families.

You will join at a transformational time, as we redesign clinical pathways to reduce waiting times and enhance patient experience. Your expertise will contribute to service innovation and improved access to care.

Aim of the role: lead within the communication clinic for the under-5 group with assessments of social communication disorders, and contribute to service development and clinical governance within Community Paediatrics.


What We Offer

The postholder will join a team of 9 Consultant Community Paediatricians, 2 community SAS doctors and one Specialty Doctor, with senior therapists and clinical nurse specialists contributing to assessments and care for young people.


Clinical Responsibilities

* Undertake assessment and management of children with neurodevelopmental concerns and safeguarding
* Undertake neurodevelopmental assessments including for Autism and Social Communication Disorders
* Participate in the consultant-led Child Protection rota
* Undertake health assessments for Looked After Children and provide written reports as appropriate
* Support and advise colleagues in clinical assessment and care of children and young people, while maintaining clear professional accountability
* Provide supervision to trainees, specialist doctors, and extended members of the clinical team including clinical nurse specialists and AHPs


General Responsibilities

* Participate in clinical supervision and continuing professional development of career and training grade medical staff
* Work with Community Paediatric services and Childrens Community Services Directorate to meet service commitments
* Develop care pathways across acute and community services
* Participate in the development of Specialist Child Health Services with the management team
* Support collection of information on the work of the medical team for stakeholders


Medical Education & Teaching

* Take part in clinical and educational supervision of post-graduate trainees
* Participate in the medical student training programme
* Plan and deliver training for GP trainees and other post-graduate teaching
* Contribute to training for health staff and inter-agency training
* Liaise with other agencies on clinical and operational matters relevant to service
* Provide advice and signposting to professionals about legal processes, key research and policy documents
* Liaise with professional leads from Education and Children's Social Care


Clinical Audit, Governance & CPD

* Participate in clinical audit, incident reporting and action implementation
* Collaborate with Directorate, Patient and Public Involvement panels on service developments
* Ensure NICE requirements are reviewed and implemented in the speciality
* Attend relevant local, regional, and national CPD activities; meet organisational training requirements
* Receive regular clinical supervision and undertake reflective practice
* Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to and updated
* Review clinical outcomes using external benchmarking data to identify variances and advise the Clinical Director
* Model good practice for infection control within the multidisciplinary team


Policy, Planning & Management

* Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care
* Contribute to development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines
* Assist in developing the Annual Service Plan and participate in strategic planning
* Comply with all Trust policies

JD is pending RCP approval. This is a new post with a special interest in the communication clinic pathway for assessments of children with social communication disorders.

There is no overnight commitment. The postholder will contribute to the daytime child protection rota, with no expectation to contribute to CSA medicals.

There are additional resources and a multidisciplinary team to support the role, including senior therapists and clinical nurse specialists.
