Overview
Senior Process Engineer
Location: Edinburgh
Type: Permanent
Nine Twenty Engineering & Manufacturing are delighted to be working in partnership with Celtic Renewables, one of Europe’s most innovative biotech companies, as they continue to scale up their pioneering Acetone-Butanol-Ethanol (ABE) fermentation technology.
Following the successful commissioning of their exemplar plant in Grangemouth, Celtic Renewables are now entering an exciting phase of growth – scaling up to deliver future demonstration and commercial plants in Scotland and beyond.
This is a unique opportunity to join at the heart of design and delivery, helping shape projects that will have a real impact on the global green energy transition.
Why Join?
* Work at the cutting edge of sustainable biotech in a company recognised as a European innovator.
* Be part of Project Willow and future scale-up projects, directly contributing to Scotland’s net zero ambitions.
* Lead meaningful projects from design through delivery – not just operations.
The Role
As Senior Process Engineer, you will play a leading role in the design, development, and commissioning of new ABE fermentation plants. You will:
* Lead the development of new plant design, ensuring technical robustness and timely delivery.
* Take ownership of front-end engineering design, including sizing and specifying equipment, producing datasheets, PFDs, P&IDs, and control philosophies.
* Manage the internal design team and external EPC partners, ensuring adherence to standards, safety, and budget.
* Support HAZOP studies and ensure safe, optimised design decisions.
* Provide senior technical support to the operations team at Grangemouth, helping drive optimisation and performance.
* Mentor junior engineers, setting standards and developing Celtic Renewables’ project delivery model.
About You
* Degree in Chemical Engineering (minimum BEng).
* 5 - 10 years’ process/project engineering experience in an EPC/design-build environment.
* Strong experience in FEED, detailed design, and equipment specification.
* Comfortable leading multidisciplinary teams and external contractors.
* Proactive, resilient, and detail-oriented with excellent communication skills.
