About the Role
We are seeking a Solicitor (0–2 years’ PQE) to join our dedicated Claims Against Police & Public Authorities (CAPA) team. This is a unique opportunity to work in a specialist area focused on protecting civil liberties and holding public bodies accountable for misconduct and abuses of power.
You will act for vulnerable individuals who have been falsely imprisoned, maliciously prosecuted, assaulted, etc often working on cases with a strong human rights focus.
We are committed to developing our junior solicitors through close supervision, structured training and case progression from an early stage.
Main Responsibilities
• Managing your own caseload with support from senior solicitors
• Acting on claims against police and other detaining authorities
• Drafting letters of claim and progressing pre-action correspondence
• Issuing proceedings and progressing cases to trial
• Taking client instructions and maintaining strong client relationships
• Working collaboratively within the team to secure justice and accountability
Key Skills and Experience
• Experience in actions against public authorities (during training or study acceptable)
• Ability to analyse evidence and apply legal principles accurately
• Excellent written communication including drafting legal pleadings and correspondence
• Ability to manage client expectations with empathy and professionalism
• Highly organised with strong time management skills
• Confident using Microsoft Office and case management systems
Person Specification
Essential
• Valid right to work in the UK
• A current practising certificate
• 0–2 years’ PQE in relevant CAPA experience
• Demonstrable interest in civil liberties, human rights and CAPA work
Preferable
• Other litigation experience
• Previous experience in police actions, detention or human rights cases
Employment Terms
Responsible to: The Directors
Salary: £38,000 – £45,000 (depending on experience and level of qualification) + entry to quarterly bonus scheme
Pension: Enrolment into GN Law’s pension scheme
Contract: Permanent, subject to 6-month probation
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Base: GN Law office, Lodge Lane, North Finchley (hybrid-working available)
Annual leave: 25 days (plus public holidays)
Maternity/shared parental leave: Enhanced package available
Notice period: 3 months following probation
