Job Summary

The IT Systems Engineer post is ideal for an IT Professional who wishes to be part of a forward-thinking, innovative IT department in a successful modern University. You will be an experienced and versatile Systems Engineer with experience at a technical level in the development, deployment, support and maintenance of IT infrastructure components such as servers, storage, virtualisation, desktop systems, identity management, security etc.

The advertised salary includes a market supplement of £10, per annum (pro-rata). This supplement is reviewed biennially and may be amended or withdrawn in line with agreed University pay policies.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: End User Computing Team Lead

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibility

PURPOSE OF POST: You will be part of the team responsible for the design, development and support of the university’s campus-wide IT infrastructure.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

1. Technical planning and implementation of End User Computing activities such as desktop builds and group policy deployments
2. To develop and support Windows and Linux Servers on associated hardware
3. To develop and support Virtualised Servers (e.g. using VMware or Nutanix)
4. To configure and deploy Applications (e.g. using System Center Configuration Manger, Citrix, Intune, JAMF) and provide third line support where required
5. VDI development and support
6. To develop and manage the universities Identity Management Systems
7. Administer, maintain and support M services, providing and implementing recommendations for change.
8. SAN management and development
9. To develop and support Windows 10/11 and macOS systems and associated applications, e.g. Office, Adobe CC Suite, Engineering Applications etc.
10. To ensure that all relevant support documentation is maintained to reflect changes and additions to the University’s infrastructure.
11. To adhere and contribute to change control processes
12. To adhere to project development standards
13. To ensure work is delivered in accordance with current IT security and quality standards and procedures.
14. To act as a mentor to colleagues developing their technical skills and understanding of the universities IT systems and standards.

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Educated to Degree Level. For exceptional candidates, significant working experience and a demonstrable track record will be accepted as an alternative.

Knowledge

15. An understanding of current developments and trends in IT
16. Awareness of ITIL service delivery and support processes

Experience

17. Experience of working within structured projects
18. Third line support, troubleshooting and resolving major incidents
19. Experience of AD and EntraID design and maintenance
20. Server and desktop deployment including virtualisation, configuration, installation and upgrades
21. Performance management, capacity monitoring & optimisation, security management
22. Endpoint and Mobile Device Management e.g. Intune and JAMF
23. Application virtualisation
24. Systems management, preferably SCCM
25. Desktop OS preferably Windows 10 and above, and macOS
26. Windows Server R2 and above
27. Microsoft and Office
28. Exchange
29. Redhat Linux
30. SAN management

DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

Professional Qualifications/Certification i.e. Microsoft, Linux, VMware, Nutanix or Citrix.

Knowledge

33. Familiar with business continuity planning

Experience

34. Providing IT infrastructure support in an environment servicing + users
35. Supervisory experience of junior staff at a technical level
36. Working in a higher education environment
37. Experience of a wide range of Linux distributions
38. Experience of Citrix XenDesktop 7
39. Experience of cloud hosting platforms
40. Experience of maintaining LAMP environments
41. Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) such as Moodle
42. Network infrastructure and technologies
