Join Our Firearms Support Unit

North Yorkshire Police are recruiting transferees to join our Firearms Support Unit (FSU). We are accepting applications from current qualified Police Officers, who would like to become Armed Response Vehicle Officers.

Our recruitment campaign is live, applications are now being invited for this role in the rank of Constable to join the next Initial Firearms Course in April/May 2026 and a future course later in the year. North Yorkshire – Firearms Support Unit

The county of North Yorkshire is vast and amongst the most spectacular landscapes in the UK, with over 6000 miles of road network, it's rural areas, coastal, towns and cities mean that it is both a fun and challenging place to work. North Yorkshire Firearms Support Unit (FSU) is part of the Specialist Operations Department and have developed in recent times, under new leadership, we have modernised and built an improved team culture that supports each other and the wider operational business. There is a renewed motivation to set high standards of policing and support colleagues to grow and develop their skills and mentality to deliver exceptional service to the public.

Post Details

After successful completion of an Initial Firearms Course (IFC) and as a valued member of the FSU you will have the opportunity for further development in specialist roles. Such as:

* Operational Firearms Commander

* Close Protection Officer

* Tactical Rifle Officer

* National Firearms Instructor

* Firearms Tactical Advisor

The location of the posting is based at either Tadcaster Police Station or Vale House in Thirsk.

Selection Requirements

At the time of application candidates must be able to confirm:

* You are standard response driver qualified.

* You have passed your probation and are a fully qualified substantive PC at the time of applying.

* You are competent in your current role, achieving appropriate attendance and with no supportive measures in place for either area.

* You have a Satisfactory rating, or above, achieved on the last reporting year PDR. Recently qualified student officers that haven't completed an annual PDR or have a rating of developing at the end of their last PDR cycle, may still apply (If in doubt please contact the Recruitment Team before applying).

* All mandatory training is up to date.

Taser trained (STO) Officers are desirable but not essential - This training will be provided on successful application prior to the IFC commencing.

All applicants must be willing to undertake and commit to the following requirements, in order that their application can be considered and progressed throughout the recruitment process:

* Completion of detailed vetting and PSD checks

* Attendance and successful completion of a role specific selection assessment process.

To be physically and medically able to pass all assessments, including nationally agreed eyesight, hearing and fitness standards.

All applications will be subject to a paper sift, in line with level 1 of the CVF framework and the key transferable skills aligned to the job description. The recruitment process is outlined under key dates below and candidates must be successful in each area to move on to the next. We can't offer different dates on assessments due to the strict timelines and planned resources required.

Successful candidates will be required to relocate at their own cost, if applicable.

Course Dates

If successful through the recruitment process, applicants should be available to start within 12 months. The Initial Firearms Course dates are to be finalised but it will be in April or May 2026 and is of 15 weeks duration. There will be a second course in September/October 2026. You need to be available for the full 15 weeks, including working late shifts, potential some weekends during the course, in order for your application to be considered.

North Yorkshire Police will expect candidates to take at least 7 days leave following completion of the Initial firearms course, inline with operational requirements.

The Firearms Training & Development Unit will support your learning in a positive and inclusive environment where they aim to get the best out of students in order to be successful. The course is demanding, testing and is pass or fail, however it is extremely rewarding.

* Fitness Test & Scenario Assessment –W/C 24th November 2025

FTDU will run Scenario Assessments and Fitness Tests at Tadcaster Police Station. Fitness Test will be first and you'll need to pass this to progress to the Scenario Assessment. National Standard - Firearms fitness test to level 9.4

* Interview Dates - W/C1st December 2025

* W/C 15th December Candidates informed of results and enter pre-employment checks.

* March 2026 – Unconditional Offer Letters - External.

* Initial Firearms Course –TBC - Planned for April/May 2026 start.

Post Interview Selection Criteria

Successful candidates will be required to undertake a medical and attend for uniform fitting as soon as possible.

Please note that to proceed to further stages in the selection process candidates must pass the fitness test on their allocated date.
