Due to our team expanding, we are currently looking for a Mechanical Maintenance Fitter - Plant to join our successful team of Fitters based at Tarmac Dolyhir / Strinds Quarry and Asphalt Plant, located in Presteigne, near Hereford in Herefordshire.
This site is easily accessible from Hay on Wye, Ludlow, Leominster, Llandrindod Wells, Newtown, and surrounding areas. We are committed to creating a dynamic and inclusive environment, and it is important that our people come from diverse backgrounds.
Role & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Section Manager, the Mechanical Maintenance Fitter - Plant is part of the 24/7 engineering team at our Dolyhir / Strinds Quarry and Asphalt Plant. Responsibilities include:
1. Responding to plant breakdowns (Quarry and Asphalt Plant), ensuring assets are returned to production promptly, and following up with permanent solutions.
2. Undertaking emergency breakdown repairs efficiently on all production equipment.
3. Planning and executing preventative maintenance and planned shutdowns.
4. Owning small-scale projects and delivering them proactively.
5. Applying a cost-conscious approach to maintenance and participating in root cause analysis to eliminate repeat failures.
6. Coordinating with contractors and suppliers on site.
7. Contributing to continuous improvement through observations and experience.
8. Welding and fabricating to a high standard.
9. Working with risk assessments and method statements, and developing safe work procedures.
10. Maintaining and promoting Health & Safety rules, following company processes, and challenging unsafe practices.
11. Utilising the computerised maintenance management system to record work details.
The Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and capable of working independently. Proven experience in an industrial or factory environment is essential, with the following qualifications and skills:
* A recognised apprenticeship (preferably higher-level).
* ONC/HNC (desirable but not essential).
* Strong practical knowledge of mechanical systems—conveyors, drive systems, motors, belts, pumps, gearboxes, crushers, vibratory screens.
* Fault-finding skills to identify defects and recommend solutions.
* Ability to remove and fit bearings.
* Capability to perform emergency repairs efficiently.
* Knowledge of SHE risks and site-specific safety procedures.
