This is a 10 PA Consultant Haematologist post at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, in addition to any current on-call commitments allocated to the role.

This post is primarily based at Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with consultant colleagues to further develop both the clinical and laboratory Haematology services, which operate across the Trust.

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

All staff are required to advocate, champion and demonstrate the below values and behaviours.

The appointee will be expected, in conjunction with their colleagues, to provide a comprehensive service for Haematology to the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust.


Main duties of the job

* Undertake such other duties as may be identified to meet the needs of the service
* Take part in a consultant rota for emergency duties currently 1:11 (weekdays) / 1:12 (weekends) frequency, and to provide, on a reciprocal basis, cover for colleagues during periods of annual or study leave.
* Carry out teaching duties as required and take an active part in the Postgraduate and Undergraduate Medical Education programmes, in the teaching of junior medical staff and to be involved in the education of technical and nursing staff.
* Provide professional supervision and management of trainee medical, technical and other staff.
* Attend regularly department meetings.
* Have continuing responsibility for in- and out-patients in their care and for the proper functioning of the department.
* Participate in East Midlands Cancer Alliance and multi-disciplinary team meetings.
* Take part in the clinical governance programme.
* Be involved in research where appropriate.
* Actively participate in the management of the services of the Care Group


Outline Job Plan

Initially, the job plan is 10 PAs with a further 0.3 PA available for on call.

The detailed job plan is negotiable. These duties will be subject to review and final agreement by the successful candidate and consultant colleagues in the department.


About us

Level 2b services are provided at Lincoln. Lincoln is a Haemophilia Centre and manages all the Trust's Haemophilia patients.

There is a dedicated 26 bed ward for Oncology and Haematology patients (Waddington Unit), as well as an Oncology Assessment Unit (OAU) with 3 chairs and 3 trollies. Outpatient Chemotherapy is given in a purpose built 20 station dedicated area, Ingham Suite, shared with Clinical Oncology.

In 2020 Clinic 7 (outpatients) was updated and remodelled to support haematology patients attending for appointments and blood testing.

Day cases requiring such interventions as blood product transfusion, indwelling line management or treatment for non-malignant Haematological disorders are treated on the Medical Day Unit. This area is managed and staffed by the Medical Directorate and provides a service to all Consultants.

There is support from seven trainees (4 x SPR, 2 x FY2 and 1x FY1) and an Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP).


Job description


Job responsibilities

The Haematology Department provides a comprehensive service. This comprises all Haemato-Oncology, General Haematology, and Haemostasis and Thrombosis referrals for investigation, diagnosis and treatment. There is additional responsibility for investigation and advice on the management of patients with Haematological problems from all other areas. Anticoagulant monitoring is managed within Primary Care.

All bone marrow aspirates and trephines are reported by the HMDS Nottingham.

Inpatient Chemotherapy is only administered at Pilgrim Hospital and Lincoln County Hospital however, outpatient services are provided at all three sites, which includes Grantham. The Trusts Cancer Services are part of the East Midlands Cancer Alliance. Intensive chemotherapy for acute Leukaemia and other patients is only provided in Lincoln. All Lymphoma patients are managed by the Haematologists.

Radiotherapy patients are managed by Consultant Clinical Oncologists, who form part of the Lymphoma and Myeloma MDT. Patients from the Grantham area requiring Clinical Oncology input are seen in Lincoln or Boston. Bone Marrow Transplant Services are provided at Nottingham City Hospital. Children with bleeding disorders requiring inpatient care are admitted under the Paediatricians and advice is provided by the Haematologists as required. Those requiring outpatient care are managed jointly by the Haematologists and Paediatricians. This does not include Paediatric Haemato-Oncology which is provided by Nottingham for the Lincoln area and Nottingham for the Boston and Grantham areas and is out with the remit of these posts.

Qualifications & Certifications


Essential

* MRCP (UK) or equivalent / FRCPath or equivalent
* Full GMC Registration
* Entry on the Specialist Register of the General Medical Council (GMC) Register


Desirable

* An appropriate higher degree e.g. an MD, PhD or equivalent
* Previous NHS Experience


Management


Essential

* Evidence of understanding management issues.
* Evidence of understanding and involvement in audit.
* Understanding of clinical governance.


Desirable

* Management training or qualification.
* Evidence of leadership in the development of clinical services.


Experience / Research


Essential

* Understanding of the principles and applications of clinical research
* Extensive experience and training in general clinical haematology
* Experience of involvement in clinical research and audit

* Peer reviewed publications.


Teaching & Training


Essential

* Experience of undergraduate / post graduate training for doctors and other disciplines

* Teaching diploma / qualification.
