Technical Instructor - Adult Nursing (Maternity Cover)
We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Technical Instructor (Adult Nursing) to join our Clinical Skills and Simulation Technician Team on a fixed-term maternity cover basis. This role is ideal for newly qualified or experienced nurses looking to transition into an educational environment.
You will play a key role in the delivery of clinical skills and simulation‑based teaching, maintenance of high‑quality simulation equipment, and support of learners as they develop essential clinical competencies.
Key Responsibilities
* Plan, prepare, deliver, and evaluate clinical skills teaching and simulation‑based activities across undergraduate and postgraduate health and social care programmes
* Provide high‑quality technical and instructional support to academic colleagues and learners
* Demonstrate, prepare, and maintain specialist clinical and simulation equipment, ensuring it is safe and fully operational
* Support learners to build confidence and competence for real‑world clinical practice
* Work collaboratively with academic staff and fellow technicians to deliver engaging, effective learning experiences
* Contribute to skills teaching and technical support across Worcester and Dudley campuses as required
Detailed Responsibilities
1. Work with academic colleagues, plan, deliver and evaluate clinical and professional skills sessions and simulation related activities across a range of undergraduate and / or postgraduate health and social care courses, drawing on own area(s) of expertise.
2. Design and develop teaching material across a range of modules and courses at a range of levels.
3. Work with academic staff, act as a module tutor, coordinating activities, resources, and assessment.
4. Provide skilled assistance and technical guidance to students, academic and research staff in the use of clinical skills and simulation equipment and teaching resources.
5. Under the direction of academic staff devise and deliver workshops and / or simulation instruction, preparing and running clinical simulation scenarios and contributing to workshops.
6. Take responsibility for the day‑to‑day operation of specified skills and simulation rooms.
7. Undertake technical work as directed in conjunction with student projects, advising students on relevant operations and techniques, observing safety precautions at all times.
8. Provide general health and safety supervision of students using equipment and working in healthcare simulation and teaching spaces, ensuring safe methods of working in accordance with statutory and University requirements.
9. Be responsible, in partnership with academic staff, for the coordination and scheduling of teaching with due regard to the availability of staff and equipment.
10. Prepare facilities in advance of scheduled teaching and ensure that all waste is dealt with promptly and the facilities reset for other users at the end of the sessions.
11. Contribute to the induction and on‑the‑job training and development of technical and academic staff.
12. Contribute to the development of opportunities for curriculum enhancing activities relating to professional practice, including but not limited to industry visits and placements.
13. Contribute to planning and implementation of strategic areas such as student recruitment, marketing, quality assurance and student retention.
14. Make recommendations to the Head of Simulation and Skills‑Based Education for improvements to enhance the experience for students and staff.
15. Supervise the day‑to‑day activities of a number of other clinical skills staff and technicians.
16. Assist with the development of new simulation scenarios, including the use of augmented reality, virtual reality and mixed modal delivery, gather appropriate data, and proactively make recommendations.
17. Contribute to external income generation, including consultancy, short courses and networking, and the identification and development of new market opportunities.
18. Ensure local management practices are robust, contributing to the development of practices and policies as appropriate.
19. Ensure that there is compliance with University Health and Safety policies, including the ability to undertake risk assessments; take corrective action where compliance is not robust.
20. Undertake specific health and safety management roles where necessary; fire warden, first aider.
21. Provide support and guidance and work closely with staff in relation to working requirements, working environment, staff wellbeing, identifying any training requirements as appropriate.

Person Specification
Knowledge and Skills
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. The post holder will need to work in teams, including having the ability to communicate confidently and clearly, both orally and in writing.
* Ability to maintain professional, working relationships across teams, and with students, staff and visitors to the University.
* Must be flexible, co‑operative, and helpful, with an ability to work with others in a team to achieve objectives, whilst appreciating own strengths and weaknesses.
* Good organisational skills and the ability to respond rapidly to change and deal with competing priorities.
* IT and AV equipment knowledge (incl. recording and distribution of footage, editing, live streaming) with a good level of computer literacy including Microsoft Office packages.
* Ability to manage self and prioritise workload.
* Ability to work shift patterns / flexibly including evenings, early morning and occasional weekend work.
* Ability to deal with confidential and sensitive issues in a discreet and tactful manner.
* Ability to handle heavy clinical equipment and transport in a safe manner.
* Understanding of health and safety regulations and risk assessment.
Experience
* Confidence with using healthcare simulation technology (e.g. high‑fidelity simulation manikins, skills trainers) and experience of providing a relevant level of technical support in healthcare simulation or clinical skills teaching.
* Experience of working and supporting learning and teaching in a clinical environment.
Qualifications
* A good relevant honours degree or equivalent service‑related experience in a closely related field.
* An Adult Nurse with a current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
* Current full UK driving licence to drive a manual vehicle between university campuses / sites to provide technical support and transport equipment.
