Specialist Medicines Management Pharmacy Technician – Band 6 (1‑Year Fixed Term)
An enthusiastic and highly motivated specialist pharmacy technician is required to join a dedicated ward‑based pharmacy team on a 1‑year fixed‑term contract. The post holder will act as a Deputy Lead within the Medicines Management Service, supporting training and development of pharmacy staff, overseeing rota planning, providing day‑to‑day supervision, and driving ongoing service improvement to optimise patient safety and outcomes.
Responsibilities
* Support the operational and professional leadership of the technician‑led ward pharmacy service within the Medicines Management Service.
* Assist with appraisal, performance review and development of Medicines Management Pharmacy Technicians.
* Assist the Chief Pharmacy Technician and Associate Chief Pharmacist – Clinical Services in strategic development of clinical pharmacy services.
* Assist in the development, review and maintenance of clinical service policies, procedures and guidelines.
* Support the development, training and competency progression of pharmacy technicians working on wards.
* Deliver training and education sessions to registered healthcare professionals and non‑registered staff.
* Contribute to the patient safety and clinical governance agenda through effective medicines management practices.
* Lead or participate in service improvement initiatives, including Cost Improvement Programmes and collation and monitoring of Medicines Management Key Performance Indicators.
* Act as Line Manager for MMPTs and/or Educational Supervisor for a Pre‑registration Pharmacy Technician.
* Support medication histories, timely medicines reconciliation, medicines adherence assessments, tailored patient consultations and contribute to improved patient flow.
Qualifications
* NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) or equivalent.
* Registered with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
* Substantial hospital pharmacy experience, including clinical ward technician role.
* Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician certificate.
* National Medicines Management Course (HEE Meds op / AIMM) or equivalent.
* Practice Supervisor qualification or equivalent.
* National Accredited Checking Qualification.
* Evidence of commitment to CPD and an up‑to‑date CPD portfolio.
* Excellence in leadership, communication, organisational and problem‑solving skills.
* Good IT skills and familiarity with pharmacy computer systems (e.g. Cerner, JAC).
* Demonstrated ability to manage complex teams effectively and recruit staff.
* Experience of managing significant change and leading quality improvement projects.
* Desirable: Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment.
* Desirable: Educational Supervisor qualification or equivalent.
* Desirable: Primary Care experience and experience managing a ward‑based or equivalent clinical service.
* Desirable: Experience of self‑medication schemes, patient medication counselling and conducting quality improvement projects.
