Overview
This is a new and exciting opportunity for a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry to combine NHS clinical activity with a formal commitment to academic clinical teaching and research. The post is a full-time Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. It attracts 10 programmed activities (PAs) in total: 6 PAs for NHS activities based at UHMB (Lancaster) and 4 PAs devoted to an academic role at the School of Dentistry, University of Central Lancashire (UCLan).
The post provides restorative consultant input to the oral and maxillofacial department with an added university academic component. It is based in Lancaster at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with duties at UCLan in Preston and may involve work at other NHS sites serving Lancashire and South Cumbria. Main duties
The maxillofacial unit provides teaching for University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) students based at the Morecambe Dental Education Centre and has close links with UCLAN. There is scope for further development in endodontics and for multidisciplinary collaboration with orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. The unit uses an electronic EPR and PACs system for radiography and digital photography across the Bay. A fully equipped maxillofacial laboratory is based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary with high-quality and skilled technical support. The post holder should be fully registered with the General Dental Council (GDC) with a licence to practice and on the specialist list for Restorative Dentistry. You should have completed, or be within 6 months of completion of, an SAC-approved training in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent at the time of interview.

About us
We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, plus community health premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre. FGH and RLI offer a range of General Hospital services with Emergency Departments, Critical Care, and Consultant-led services. WGH provides General Hospital services and an Urgent Treatment Centre. All three main hospitals provide planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery, with local outreach services and diagnostics across Morecambe Bay.

The Unit provides a comprehensive secondary-care service in all aspects of restorative dentistry, with multidisciplinary collaboration with orthodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. The service has developed a managed clinical network (MCN) in South Cumbria for endodontics and there are discussions with local commissioners about expanding this further. Links have been developed with Lancashire Teaching Hospital to enable local patients to be treated locally.
Education and qualifications
* Full Registration with the United Kingdom General Dental Council (GDC).
* On the specialist GDC list in Restorative Dentistry or within 6 months of eligibility for inclusion.
* Inter‑Collegiate Specialty Fellowship Exit Examination in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent.
* Possession of a certificate of Accreditation or eligibility for a CSST in Restorative Dentistry.
* Masters Degree (or equivalent) in a restorative clinical discipline.
Experience and Training
* Successful completion of SAC-approved 5-year training programme in Restorative Dentistry, or within 6 months of completion or equivalent.
* Current holders of NHS or honorary NHS Consultant contracts in Restorative Dentistry are eligible to apply.
* European or overseas candidates should show equivalence to the formal 5-year training pathway in Restorative Dentistry.
Research and development
* Higher Degree (MSc or PhD).
Teaching
* Commitment to dental education of undergraduate and postgraduate students.
* Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience.
Management
* Understanding of the management responsibilities of NHS consultants.
* Administrative or management roles during training of primary or secondary care teams.
* Recognised qualification or certificate course in management.
Skills, ability and knowledge
* Ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients, relatives and colleagues.
* Works well within a multidisciplinary environment.
* Commitment to continuing medical education and involvement in clinical governance and audit.
