As a Principal Engineer working as part of the Product Safety Discipline but within the Programme Product Safety team, the role will work autonomously, bringing experience and knowledge to provide domain thought leadership, process facilitation and stakeholder management in the achievement of the safety case argument.
The role is responsible for leading on Hazard identification, Risk analysis and the development of the scheme of safety alongside subsystem Technical Authorities. Key to the role is providing engineering support and expertise to the Technical Authority, enabling them to create a safe product.
The role will be responsible for the creation of a safety case argument, built upon a foundation of assurance evidence and other artefacts. The overarching goal of product safety team is to ensure that hazards are either eliminated or that risk is managed so far as is reasonably practicable.
Duties
* Provide engineering support and specialist expertise to the Combat Systems Technical Authority (TA) teams, assisting with the identification, management, and mitigation of the hazards and risks and contributing to the development and ongoing refinement of the hazard log.
* Coordinate and lead customer engagement workshops, agreeing evidence requirements, preparing evidence packs and producing the safety submission.
* Conduct the product safety assessment for major subsystems or key complex technologies, ensuring risk and understood and appropriately managed.
* Lead updates to domain System Design Safety Assessments (SDSAs) to support programme safety case refreshes, ensuring product safety risks progress to the required maturity levels, and coordinating input from relevant contributors .
* Manage engagement with a broad range of stakeholders across the supplier base, BAE, Ministry of Defence, and Royal Navy to support progress to safety certification.
* Provide engineering support and specialist expertise to the Technical Authority to enable the delivery of a safe, compliant product.
* Develop safety case arguments supported by robust assurance evidence and associated artefacts.
* Act as both a thought leader and facilitator in ensuring of risks are managed to levels that are as low as reasonably practicable.
* Responsible for product safety assessment against major subsystems or key complex technologies
* Verify and assure the quality and accuracy of submissions to the Hazard Log
* Produce monthly reporting and statistics on the contents of the Hazard Log
* Plan, organise and facilitate HAZIDs and review meetings and contribute to other HAZIDs when required.
* Work collaboratively with the TA teams and embedded Safety Engineers to gather, validate, and present product safety evidence to support the safety case and acceptance via the Requirements and Acceptance Team
* Take ownership of all product safety activities within the allocated equipment area, including the delegation,, tasking and review the work completed by junior engineers.
Knowledge:
* Good knowledge of product safety management processes and techniques
* Experience of working in more than one phase of the Life Cycle Management (LCM) framework, with sufficient experience of the total LCM to enable a good understanding of adjacent phases and through life engineering issues.
* Awareness of customer (Ship/ System Safety) standards such as:-
* DSA-02 / DSA-03
* JSP430;
* Def. Stan 00-056;
* Mil Std 882E
* BS EN 61508
Skills:
* Familiar with the Product Safety Management Framework
* Familiarity with Life Cycle Management (LCM)
* A wide knowledge of Product / Ship Safety management practices
* Strong experience in delivering Product Safety in naval projects for the MoD or a defence or related industry, with experience of naval sensors and/or weapons an advantage.
* Familiarity with BAE Systems Product Safety policies and procedures, (e.g. Product Safety Management Framework)
