Assistant Buyer
Location: Gillingham
Hours: 8:30am - 5:00pm
Salary: £28,000 - £35,000
Working Pattern: Office based initially, up to 2 days WFH post‑probation
The Opportunity
We're recruiting an Assistant Buyer to join a established construction‑led organisation delivering multiple live projects across the UK. This role offers real project ownership, exposure to senior stakeholders, and the chance to develop within a structured buying function.
This is not a passive buying support role. It suits someone who enjoys working with detailed data, technical specifications and numbers, and who is confident pushing back, negotiating and speaking with site teams and suppliers.
What You'll Be Doing
Managing procurement activity across multiple construction projects from start to finish
Sourcing and ordering materials against drawings, schedules or technical specs
Raising, tracking and maintaining accurate purchase orders within an in‑house ERP system
Working closely with site teams to confirm requirements, lead times and delivery dates
Comparing supplier pricing, negotiating costs and supporting value‑driven decisions
Maintaining detailed, structured procurement data to support cost control and reporting
Supporting invoice checks and ensuring accuracy between orders, deliveries and budgets
What We're Looking For
An Assistant Buyer looking to step into a new hands‑on, project‑led role
A Junior Buyer or Procurement Assistant from construction or engineering
A strong Project / Commercial Coordinator with solid buying exposureYou'll need:
Experience working with structured data (materials, costs, specs, budgets)
Confidence using ERP, CRM or procurement systems (exact system training provided)
Strong Excel skills and comfort working with numbers
The ability to negotiate, query discrepancies and challenge where needed
A proactive mindset - you don't wait to be told when something doesn't add up
