Job Summary
To ensure accurate planning and delivery of radiotherapy, as prescribed, and in line with the Quality Management System, with appropriate care of the patient with a cancer diagnosis.
To be actively involved with the development of radiotherapy services.
The post holder must contribute to the efficient running of the service and work within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust policies and Health & Safety legislation.
Key Responsibilities
* Ensure accurate recording/input of treatment and planning data.
* Analyse systematically and evaluate all data and information relevant to patients’ diagnosis, ensuring patients and their relatives are treated with dignity and respect at all times.
* Communicate confidential sensitive information and provide emotional support to patients and their carers/relatives.
* Undertake and evaluate radiation dose delivery and complex calculations involving a range of radiation types and energies.
* Interpret, monitor and evaluate the treatment prescriptions to ensure accurate and reproducible radiotherapy delivery in accordance with the quality system.
* Accurately position patients and operate highly complex radiotherapy and imaging equipment along the radiotherapy pathway.
* Ensure all work and actions comply with local rules and current UK Ionising Radiation Regulations (IRR 2017 and IR(ME)R 2017).
* Participate in the shift system, including bank holidays, weekend working and on‑call duties.
* Conduct machine checks, report variances, faults and malfunctions of radiotherapy equipment.
* Evaluate treatment delivery through application and interpretation of verification procedures.
* Follow appropriate systems and working methods to achieve safe, timely achievement of workload targets.
* Keep accurate records and comply with necessary policies and procedures.
* Provide information to patients and carers about the radiotherapy pathway and expected side effects.
* Communicate accurate and timely information with all other disciplines involved along the patient’s pathway.
* Anticipate and identify common and complex treatment‑related side effects, offering advice and referring to relevant health‑care professionals where necessary.
* Apply safe and effective moving and handling skills to protect patients and staff and abide by Health and Safety legislation.
* Minimise risk of cross‑infection through contamination by bodily fluids/matter in accordance with the infection control policy.
* Implement procedures and work instructions described for the department in the accredited Quality Management System and report any variances.
* Participate in audit, research, and implementation of new processes and techniques within the department.
* Undertake training and competency to dispense medication under Patient Group Directive (PGD).
* Any other duties negotiated with the post holder to develop the role within the organisation.
* Achieve all competencies outlined by the radiotherapy education team within the time period specified by the line manager.
Personal Skills
* Liaise with the multi‑disciplinary team to ensure adequate information and support is available to patients.
* Effort and determination to meet clinical demands.
* Proficiency in patient transfer and manual handling tasks as required.
Training and Development
* Attend all essential training and clinical updates as required and participate in an annual Personal Development Review.
* Assimilate new ideas and techniques.
* Assist in the supervision and training/teaching of pre‑registration students and new members of staff.
* Highlight to line manager all issues of poor performance, including capability and poor professional standards, for students and employees.
The Christie at Oldham opened in 2010 and is one of three satellites delivering radiotherapy across the network. The centre recently completed a £6 million replacement programme replacing linacs and the CT scanner.
Radiographers work closely with the medical support and information team, providing an accurate, efficient and high‑quality radiation service. Working hours must be flexible to fit the needs of the service, including evenings, some weekend work and bank holidays. Individuals are expected to participate in all shift patterns.
