Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic Paediatric Nurse with an interest and experience in the role of paediatric allergy.

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the day-to-day management of the Paediatric Allergy Nurse – Led Service. The post holder will work in partnership with other services to maintain efficient management of the caseload.

NHS Employees should ideally secure their manager’s agreement for a secondment arrangement ideally prior to applying, as this will be a condition of any offer made. This vacancy is advertised on a fixed term basis as It has been established to support the an employee on a career break and will end in 9 months or when the substantive postholder returns. Whilst this post is advertised on an acting / secondment basis there is the potential that this post may become permanent in the future.

Main duties of the job

The Paediatric Allergy Specialist Nurse will provide care and support for Children and Young People (CYP) with allergies in the community and on Rainbow Ward, working alongside both primary and secondary care staff; to empower CYP and their families/carers to manage their allergies and healthcare needs confidently and competently through the provision of specialist nursing care.

Maintain and contribute to setting, monitoring and audit of excellent standards of nursing care with other members of the Children’s nursing team.

The practitioner will be expert in all areas of care specific to the needs of the CYP who present to the Paediatric Outpatients Department (POPD) and Rainbow Ward with allergies, who require support to access services provided by the organisation.

They will participate and contribute to the on-going strategic development of Paediatric allergies in response to local, regional and national directives. Will work with Paediatric acute & complex care providers in the acute site/community, implementing systems and processes to provide high quality standardised service delivery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the day-to-day management of the Paediatric Allergy Nurse – Led Service. The post holder will work in partnership with other services to maintain efficient management of the caseload.

The practitioner will be expert in all areas of care specific to their practice, whilst maintaining a holistic family centred approach, which facilitates clinical practice development. They will support and lead the delivery of evidence based CYP centred care, which is of a high standard. They are responsible for ensuring all care is delivered according to Trust policies and procedures. Utilising clinical audit, research, supervision of practice and teaching, they will monitor and improve standards of care by efficient and effective use of resources in line with the Trusts Clinical Governance Strategy.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria

1. RSCN / Registered Nurse (Child Branch)
2. 1st level degree
3. Teaching qualification e.g. ENB 998/ mentorship in practice
4. Post basic qualification in relevant area that has enhanced clinical practice
5. Level 3 safeguarding

Desirable criteria

6. Non-Medical Prescribing course (or willingness to work towards obtaining this)

Experience

Essential criteria

7. Previous experience of nursing children with allergies in hospital
8. Experience of working in paediatric inpatient/ ambulatory/ community or A+E settings
9. Clear understanding of child protection and safeguarding procedures
10. Able to innovate and influence service delivery
11. Evidence of continuing professional development
12. Management of children within an acute and community setting
13. Ability to understand and apply change management theory
14. Must be able to demonstrate evidence of continued professional development and good awareness of recent research issues in specialist field
15. Moving and handling of both patients and objects
16. Undertaking clinical tasks
17. Management and correct handling of medical devices etc
18. Medication management

Desirable criteria

19. Broad range of clinical experience and the ability to translate learning into practice
20. Significant post registration experience including experience at Band 6 in Child Health Nursing

Skills

Essential criteria

21. Clinical skills in skin prick testing, adrenaline autoinjector and inhaler technique
22. Demonstrate ability to pass on expertise and knowledge to others
23. Willingness to develop the service
24. Evidence of assessment skills and ability to plan care for patients
25. Demonstrate a high standard of communication skills
26. Demonstrate effective time and resource management
27. Must be able to work confidently within integrated partnerships at a strategic level
28. Establish effective working relationships with CYP, their families and carers, recognising and respecting their contribution to the care plan
29. Evidence of influencing, motivating and negotiating with others to achieve change in relation to care
30. Engage in clinical supervision and self-evaluation, using this to improve care and practice
31. Demonstrable experience and involvement in clinical audit methods and quality initiatives related to clinical team activities
32. Able to apply research evidence to clinical practice
33. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and as part of a team, recognition of own limitations
34. Demonstrate excellent communication and inter-personal skills
35. Must be approachable, self-motivated with the ability to motivate others
36. Must be able to demonstrate an understanding of equal opportunities
37. Required to undertake concentration for programme of care plans daily
38. Must have basic IT skills or be prepared to undertake training
39. Flexible attitude to ways and hours of working
