Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced and technically competent Lead Mechanical Technician (LMech) to oversee the safe, efficient, and compliant delivery of planned preventative and reactive maintenance within a critical environment. This is a hands:on supervisory position, responsible for leading on:site mechanical operations while supervising internal technicians and specialist subcontractors.
The successful candidate will take an active role in day:to:day engineering activities, participate in a shift rota, and support site leadership in maintaining the highest standards of technical performance, safety, and reliability across all mechanical systems.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Act as Deputy to the Technical Services Supervisor (TSS) when required
Participate in emergency escalation procedures and provide out:of:hours technical support
Ensure strict adherence to safe systems of work, including RAMS, LOTO, and Permit to Work processes
Maintain all required site certifications and operate as an Authorised Person (AP) where appointed
Lead by example, promoting a strong culture of safety, professionalism, and technical excellence
Maintenance and Engineering
Oversee and carry out routine, reactive, and emergency maintenance on mechanical and critical infrastructure systems
Diagnose, rectify, and escalate mechanical faults efficiently and effectively
Coordinate maintenance activities with the Helpdesk/DigiHub and liaise with end users to ensure timely access
Ensure all works-both self:delivered and subcontracted-meet engineering standards and industry best practice
Support minor projects, plant upgrades, and asset replacement works as required
Team and Stakeholder Management
Allocate internal and subcontractor resources effectively to meet operational deadlines and service levels
Foster a team culture focused on safety, sustainability, and continuous improvement
Build and maintain strong working relationships with clients, engineers, and external suppliers
Mentor technicians and apprentices, supporting skills development and performance improvement
Reporting and Compliance
Provide regular updates to the TSS, highlighting progress, risks, and resource requirements
Ensure all maintenance activities are accurately recorded within the CMMS
Maintain full compliance with statutory regulations, site procedures, and internal engineering standards
Complete mandatory training and ensure technical competencies remain current
Required Qualifications and Experience
Education and Training
NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline
Authorised Person (AP) certification (desirable)
Experience
Minimum 5 years' hands:on experience in mechanical maintenance
Previous experience within a critical or high:reliability environment is highly desirable
Technical Skills
Strong fault:finding and diagnostic capability across mechanical systems
Sound knowledge of engineering standards, statutory compliance, and best practice
IT and Systems
Competent with Microsoft Office applications
Experience using CMMS platforms for asset management and task tracking
