Loanhead, Edinburgh (with frequent travel)

4-day week (Mon–Thurs) or 5-day week (Mon–Thurs + half day Friday)

Commissioning Technician (Mechanical & Hydraulic)

We are seeking a skilled and adaptable Commissioning Technician (Mechanical & Hydraulic) to join MacTaggart Scott, reporting directly to the Commissioning Manager within our Commissioning Department.

As a key member of the Engineering team, you will carry out installation, supervision, commissioning and in-service support activities on MacTaggart Scott manufactured equipment worldwide. This is a hands-on role requiring strong mechanical and hydraulic knowledge, professionalism, and the ability to perform effectively in high-pressure environments, often at short notice.

MacTaggart Scott has been delivering innovative engineering solutions since 1898. We primarily support the Naval Defence industry, providing complete lifecycle solutions, from concept and design through manufacture, commissioning and through-life support. Our Commissioning team plays a vital role in ensuring equipment is installed, tested and accepted to the highest standards, both in-house and at customer sites worldwide.

The primary objective of this role is to carry out equipment installation, commissioning, acceptance and in-service support activities in line with customer requirements, ensuring compliant products and high-quality service delivery.


Responsibilities

* Carry out equipment installation, commissioning, acceptance and in-service support activities in line with customer requirements.
* Ensure compliant products and high-quality service delivery.
* Coordinate and supervise subcontract personnel and teams.
* Carry out commissioning and acceptance activities for new and refurbished equipment in line with schedule and budget.
* Assist with preparation of Harbour Acceptance Test (HAT) and Sea Acceptance Test (SAT) procedures.
* Liaise with customers to manage equipment acceptance.
* Deliver effective training packages for safe operation and maintenance of equipment.
* Conduct fault diagnosis, repair, and equipment surveys.
* Produce high-quality technical and survey reports.
* Assist with preparation of risk assessments and method statements.
* Support in-house testing and commissioning activities alongside Test Engineers.
* Promote and adhere to company Health & Safety policies at all times.
* Contribute to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement within the Commissioning team.
* Communicate effectively with both internal teams and customers; be confident engaging directly with clients.
* Demonstrate strong hydraulic and mechanical systems knowledge; work independently away from home.
* Provide clear and professional technical reports; maintain flexibility and a practical, problem-solving mindset.


Qualifications & Experience

* Completed mechanical or hydraulic apprenticeship with relevant qualification (HNC, City & Guilds, Scotvec or equivalent).
* Strong knowledge of hydraulic circuits, components, and mechanical systems.
* Experience in commissioning, installation or maintenance of mechanical/hydraulic systems.
* Strong report writing skills and competency with MS Office.
* Experience with electro-mechanical and hydraulic handling systems.
* Working knowledge of electrical circuits, PLCs and control systems.
* Understanding of variable speed electric drives and controls.
* Awareness of military environmental requirements (safety, EMC, shock, noise, vibration, hazardous areas).
* BSc or BEng in a relevant engineering discipline.
* Frequent worldwide travel, including extended periods away from home.
* Ability to work within military and naval establishments where security and confidentiality are essential.
* Flexible and professional approach to working hours and locations.
* Ability to work away from home for significant periods.
