Why work for us?
Patients are at the centre of everything we do in our daily working lives at NHS Borders ensuring they are safe, cared for efficiently, effectively by suitably experienced and qualified staff driving quality at the heart of patient care. We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a wealth of clinical and leadership experience. We aim for an open and honest culture and believe in nurturing future stars in NHS.
The Role
We are seeking Consultant General Paediatrician(s) to join the combined Child Health Department of NHS Borders. You may be a general paediatrician but have areas of special interest complimentary to the current Consultant team or a community paediatrician with general experience and on call experience.
There are multiple part-time posts available.
The post is based at the modern and well-equipped 284 bed Borders General Hospital with a major role in services for children in the community. There are established links with the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, in Edinburgh, with opportunities for joint working. We have close undergraduate and postgraduate links with the University of Edinburgh Medical School and excellent on-site library facilities.
The Hospital has implemented an innovative Paediatric Hospital at Night redesign and our first call resident cover is provided by experienced Paediatric and Neonatal Nurse Advanced Practitioners supported by consultants within a minimum recall time.
The hospital is located in a rural setting with excellent schools, abundant local amenities and good transport links to Edinburgh. Superb local leisure facilities plus good quality affordable housing, provide ideal opportunities for a high quality of life in this scenic part of the country. A relocation package up to full Inland Revenue limits is available for the successful candidate(s) if relocating their main residence to the local area.
In a new service development, NHS Borders will offer all newly appointed consultants executive coaching with a trained coach, intended to develop your own leadership style and effective decision making.
Candidates must hold MRCP or equivalent certificate eg MRCPH for current trainees and must also be fully registered with the General Medical Council on the Specialist Register or within 6 months of entry at interview date.

If the post is assessed as a "regulated role", your appointment will be subject to joining the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme. To work in the United Kingdom, there is a legal requirement for an individual to demonstrate that they have the relevant permission to work in the country. This permission is, without exception, granted by the UK Visa and Immigrations Service.
As part of the pre-employment checks for a preferred candidate, NHS Scotland Boards will check your entitlement to work in the UK. It can be evidenced through a number of routes including specific types of visa as well as EU settled and pre-settled status. To find out more about these routes of permission, please refer to the GOV.UK website here .
For specific types of post, if you do not have the necessary eligibility to work in the UK, it might be possible (though not guaranteed) to secure sponsorship via a UK Skilled Worker/Health & Care Worker Visa. However, this is only possible if the employer is a licenced Sponsor, and if the post does not fall below the current minimum salary threshold or ‘going rate’. Further information on these criteria can be found here .
It is ESSENTIAL that you have checked that you either already have an appropriate right to work in the UK or that the post would be eligible to be sponsored BEFORE submitting your application form
**PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accept late applications so please ensure your application is submitted early**
