Job Introduction

An exciting opportunity is available for a highly skilled Electricity Distribution Network Technician (Fitting) in the Plant Centre based at Huthwaite.

This role is ideal for an experienced and forward‑thinking individual with strong technical capability, a passion for high‑quality engineering, and the confidence to support both operational delivery and the development of new equipment and processes. The successful candidate will play a key part in commissioning, maintenance, training, and innovation within the Plant Centre—contributing directly to the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of NGED’s network.

You are required to have grade A*-C/4-9 GCSE in English and Maths or Functional Skills Level 2 qualification in both subjects.

Please note the successful candidate may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.


Main Responsibilities

* Demonstrate a full understanding of, and ability to program and commission the T300/Gemini RTU’s and any future approved remote‑control equipment.
* Program and commission the RL27 and RL38 pole mounted switch, including applying detection settings to the F.P.I & sectionaliser options.
* Program and commission the Nulec U series auto‑re‑closers, including applying configuring and applying all associated protection settings.
* Work confidently with a range of secondary switchgear protection relays such as Sepam S40, VIP 400 and Fanox in addition to any future developed and approved devices.
* Demonstrate a full understanding of the maintenance and workshop commissioning of Voltage Regulators and CL7 controllers.
* Be able to interpret and apply protection and detection settings to the full range of equipment supplied to NGED (National Grid Electricity Distribution) including CCP’s (Connection Control Panels).
* Communicate effectively and provide technical support to external suppliers and internal NGED departments including Network Design, Policy, Telecoms and Operations i.e. Planners, Technicians and Engineering Specialists.
* Take an active part in training of staff and apprentices as required.
* Demonstrate working knowledge of all ST’s relating to the Midlands Plant Centre procedures.
* Carry out cold commissioning and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of CCP’s in order to be able to support the wider business operations.
* Participate in the acceptance and development of new equipment and devices, working closely with Policy Engineers and Suppliers.
* Ensure all Plant Centre activities comply with Health and Safety standards and company policies.
* Supervise the day‑to‑day operations of the Plant Centre in the absence of the Operations Manager.
* Attain HVTB authorisation and undertake HV Test Bay duties including Pressure Testing.
* Undertake mentor training and act as a key point of contact for local training and development.


Ideal Candidate

* Level 2 City & Guilds 2339 qualification (or equivalent Level 2 Electrical Engineering qualification) is required. Candidates who have not yet achieved City & Guilds 2339 Level 3 will be expected to undertake this as part of the role.
* Proven technical experience in programming and commissioning distribution automation equipment, such as RTUs, pole‑mounted switches, auto‑reclosers, and secondary protection relays.
* Strong understanding of protection, detection and control settings, with the ability to interpret, configure and apply these across a wide range of NGED equipment, including Connection Control Panels (CCPs).
* Practical experience in the maintenance, testing and workshop commissioning of equipment such as Voltage Regulators and CL7 controllers.
* Confident communicator with the ability to work collaboratively with suppliers, internal technical teams and departments including Network Design, Policy, Telecoms and Operations.
* Ability and willingness to take an active role in the training, mentoring and development of colleagues.
* Strong awareness of Health & Safety requirements, ensuring safe working practices and compliance with company policies at all times.
* Ability to support operational needs by undertaking cold commissioning, equipment acceptance testing and involvement in the development of new devices.
* Capability to supervise the Plant Centre’s Day‑to‑day activities when required, demonstrating strong organisational and problem‑solving skills.
* Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a small team, making sound decisions under pressure.
* Flexible, proactive attitude with the resilience to work to tight deadlines in a fast‑paced environment.

Potential candidates should be aware that for some of the National Grid positions that require working at height, or use fall arrest devices, there is an upper weight limit 135kg due to maximum safe working load of the safety equipment that is used.

Depending on the role, different levels of screening and vetting are required. Some roles require a triannual check.
