Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen to apply for an Advanced Financial Analyst role within the ISM finance team, at Guy's & St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust.


Main duties of the job

The role of the Advanced Financial Analyst is demanding and supports the production of monthly reports, projections and analysis for one of the largest NHS Trusts in the country. The post holder will also help plan and lead on specific areas of work that may cut across the whole Trust.


Key responsibilities

* Produce the monthly set of management accounting information.
* Meet with budget-holders and generate intelligence to support forecasting and business plans.
* Support Senior Financial Management staff.
* Take the lead in setting up new reports, reviewing existing standards and providing training to budget-holders and other key staff.


Ideal candidate profile

The ideal applicant already has substantial experience working within a finance function with proven experience in a Financial Management role. The candidate should be enthusiastic, keen to learn, have a good eye for detail, be able to meet deadlines, possess strong communication and advanced IT skills, and be actively studying towards a CCAB qualification.

Qualifications

* Educated to at least AAT certificate level, degree level, or equivalent experience.
* Significant progress made towards completing a CCAB qualification.


Skills

* Advanced ECDL qualification, spreadsheet skills to macro level.
* Good working knowledge of the method of operation of all the accounting sub-systems.
* Understanding of the use and purpose of accounting accruals and provisions.
* Understanding of the use and purpose of balance sheet accounts for stock accounting.
* Ability to prepare statements of budget and actual performance from a trial balance.
* Ability to identify and investigate significant variances summarising the financial position and identifying trends.


Experience

* Substantial experience of working in an accounting department and proven experience within a financial management role.
* Advanced ECDL qualification, spreadsheet skills to macro level.

* Understanding of the use and purpose of balance sheet accounts for stock accounting.

* Able to work with minimal supervision from the Senior Financial Analyst.

* Flexible and able to work as part of a team to ensure team deadlines are met.
* Shows initiative and works well when not being directly supervised.
* Professional presentation of a high standard.
* Strong sense of quality and customer focus.
* Ability to listen to budget holders and other senior managers, and respond in a way that non-financial staff can understand.
* Effective oral and written communication skills.
* Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work closely with staff at all levels.
* Confidence and professionalism when handling queries from budget holders.
* Judgement and experience to analyse variances and trends.
* Self‑motivated with a proactive approach to problem solving.
* Prepared to contribute to the operation of the department.
* Attention to detail required in financial management.
* Capacity to concentrate and focus on a range of issues, especially during the monthly reporting cycle.
