The successful candidate will work closely with the Haematuria Pathway Lead (Band 8a ANP) to develop advanced assessment, triage and pathway coordination skills within a nurse-led haematuria pathway service. Main duties of the job
1. Support telephone assessment and triage of haematuria referrals
2. Progressing towards independent haematuria telephone triage and autonomous nurse-led practice following competency assessment
3. Coordinate diagnostics and investigations within the haematuria pathway
4. Assist in the coordination of one-stop haematuria clinics, supporting clinicians and outcomes
5. Develop advanced clinical assessment skills under supervision of the Band 8a ANP

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The Haematuria Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will play a pivotal role in the delivery and ongoing development of the nurse-led Haematuria Early Diagnosis Pathway within the Urology Outpatient Department. Working closely with the Haematuria Pathway Lead (Band 8a Advanced Nurse Practitioner) and the wider multidisciplinary team, the post holder will provide expert clinical assessment, triage, coordination and management of patients referred with haematuria, ensuring timely access to diagnostics and specialist review.
The post holder will be responsible for undertaking comprehensive patient assessments, reviewing referrals, identifying clinical priorities, and coordinating investigations in line with local and national guidelines. They will act as a key point of contact for patients throughout their diagnostic pathway, providing clinical advice, support and education to promote a positive patient experience and reduce anxiety during the diagnostic process.
The successful candidate will contribute to the development of advanced clinical decision-making skills and work towards autonomous practice within the haematuria pathway. They will support the implementation of innovative service developments aimed at improving pathway efficiency, reducing waiting times and facilitating earlier diagnosis of urological malignancies and other underlying conditions.
Key responsibilities include:
8. Assessing and triaging haematuria referrals to ensure patients are managed appropriately and within agreed pathway timelines.
9. Coordinating investigations including imaging, cystoscopy and laboratory tests, ensuring timely progression through the pathway.
10. Providing specialist nursing advice and support to patients, relatives and carers throughout the diagnostic journey.
11. Monitoring patient progress, reviewing investigation results and escalating concerns to the appropriate medical or nursing teams.
12. Working collaboratively with consultants, advanced practitioners, diagnostic services and administrative teams to deliver seamless patient care.
13. Contributing to the development, implementation and evaluation of clinical protocols, standard operating procedures and service improvement initiatives.
14. Maintaining accurate and contemporaneous patient records in accordance with Trust policies and professional standards.
15. Participating in audit, quality improvement and data collection activities to support pathway performance monitoring and service development.
16. Supporting education and training for nursing and multidisciplinary colleagues, promoting best practice within haematuria assessment and management.
17. Acting as a professional role model, demonstrating the Trust values of being caring, ambitious and inclusive in all aspects of practice.

Qualifications/Education
Essential criteria
18. BSC/1st degree (health related) or equivalent qualification/training and experience
19. Your professional knowledge acquired at degree level will be supplemented by specialist training, experience and short courses to Masters level equivalent.
20. Post registration qualification in appropriate area of speciality or equivalent post qualification experience.

Professional/ Statutory Registration

25. RN1 or RN Child Registered Nurse on the NMC register. To hold the appropriate level for the area of speciality.
