Overview
Are you an Adult Nurse who would like to become a midwife? If you have at least 6 months post‑registration experience as a nurse, we may support your change of career through our BSc (Hons) Midwifery (shortened) programme. We work with the University of Suffolk to support your application to change career and we currently have vacancies for the September 2025 cohort. Completion of the programme does not automatically guarantee a permanent post, but the Trust is keen to retain newly qualified midwives within the organisation. All successful applicants will be invited to an interview day with university lecturers and Trust personnel. Exact dates and times will be confirmed with successful candidates, and candidates should allow the whole day for the interview process. The NMC stipulates that shortened midwifery training can only be offered to qualified Adult Nurses; other practitioner groups are not eligible.
Responsibilities and Learning
Practical placements are offered within the Trust, with placements in various clinical locations to meet NMC practice requirements. Placements may include:
* Community midwifery placement
* Midwifery‑led birthing unit
* Labour suite
* Antenatal clinic
* Neonatal unit placement
* Health visitor placement
* Exposure to leadership and teamwork in another trust
You will be supported by a practice supervisor and practice assessor during placements. The course theory is led by the University of Suffolk in Ipswich and taught via virtual classrooms and on‑campus sessions, organized into modules across the course duration. If applying on a secondment basis, please discuss with your Line Manager before applying to confirm suitability.
Eligibility and Qualifications
* Qualified Adult Nurse (child branch, mental health, ODP and other healthcare practitioners are not eligible for shortened midwifery training)
* Current UK professional registration where required for the role
* Ability to undertake DBS (Criminal Records check) if the role involves working with children or adults
Application Process and Interviews
Recruitment for student midwives is taking place at several partner trusts across East Anglia. If you apply to more than one NHS trust via NHS Jobs, you will be interviewed once by a panel representing your chosen trusts alongside a representative from the University. Please specify in your application which trusts you have applied to (or intend to apply to) so that panel interviews can be arranged with the correct representatives. Please apply to the Trust where you wish to be employed for practice placements and where you can commute. For questions, please email the Course Leader.
Travel, DBS, and Compliance
* Travel and parking arrangements are available; information on staff parking and travel discounts is provided in the advert
* DBS checks will be required as part of pre‑employment checks
* UK registration must be current if required for the role
