We are currently seeking dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistants to work across a range of supportive and inclusive secondary and primary school environments in Stoke on Trent, and nearby areas. Whether you’re looking for short-term, long-term, or day-to-day placements, we can offer flexible opportunities that match your availability and passion.
Your Role:
As a SEMH Teaching Assistant supporting pupils with Social, Emotional & Mental Health Needs you will:
1. Work 1:1 or in small groups with pupils identified as having SEMH needs.
2. Support students in managing emotions, building resilience, and developing appropriate social skills.
3. Assist the class teacher in adapting lessons and resources to suit individual pupils.
4. Implement and contribute to Individual Education Plans (IEPs), Behaviour Support Plans (BSPs), and risk assessments.
5. Encourage positive behaviour and promote a calm, supportive classroom environment.
6. Act as a key adult for pupils, building trusting relationships and offering consistent emotional support.
7. Monitor and record student progress, providing feedback to teachers and relevant professionals.
8. Help manage challenging behaviour using appropriate de-escalation techniques and following the school’s behaviour policy.
9. Work collaboratively with staff, families, and external professionals (e.g., CAMHS, social services).
What We’re Looking For:
10. CACHE Level 2/3, HLTA status, degree in Psychology or Education, Experience in SEMH settings – Essential
11. Empathy & Understanding – A nurturing, patient approach
12. Strong Behavioural Management – Calm under pressure, supportive and consistent
13. Adaptability & Resilience – Able to meet varied needs across different schools
14. Excellent Communication – With pupils, staff, and families
