Overview

Modality Walsall One PCN - Walsall Division has a full-time vacancy for a GP Assistant on a 1 year fixed term contract. The postholder will be a GP Assistant and will provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. They help to support GPs and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery. Salary starting from £25,000 per annum WTE depending on experience.

Main duties

The role is an all-rounded, hands-on clinical role; the postholder main focus of the role is on supporting General Practitioners in their day-to-day management of patients, specifically aimed at reducing the administrative burden, making best use of consultation time and supporting access to appointments. The postholder will work in collaboration with the PCN to deliver innovative ways of working to meet the strategic aims of the PCN.

The role is not a regular 9am-5pm job and is not a back-office advisory and support role; the job requires innovation, flexibility and commitment and the postholder will be required to work resourcefully as part of the team to ensure tasks are completed

Job Description

As part of the wider team in general practice, GP Assistants provide a support role, carrying out administrative tasks, combined in some areas with basic clinical duties. They help to support GPs and contribute to the smooth running of appointments, improving patients experience in the surgery. The focus of the role is on supporting General Practitioners in their day-to-day management of patients, specifically aimed at reducing the administrative burden, making best use of consultation time and supporting access to appointments


Supporting the Doctor

* Recording and documenting findings and observations from a consultation under the instruction or supervision of a clinician.
* Supporting the administrative role of the GP in any way the GP deems appropriate, including the below but not limited to this list:
* Request District Nurse visits or complete referral to District Nursing or referrals to community teams.
* Complete A&G, Wheelchair forms and routine referrals generated during doctor shift.
* Initiate mental health crisis team referrals as requested by doctor.
* Initiate inpatient admission procedures as requested by Doctor.
* Complete and send pathology and radiology requests.
* Review GP list to see if patients appropriately booked or could be signposted to another service.
* Preparing patients going into see GP/Clinician with basic history and basic observations if relevant.
* Dipping urine, taking blood pressure, ECGs & phlebotomy
* Requesting AccuRX photographs or relevant information to aid consultation if relevant.
* Chase up information from 3rd parties that relate to presenting patients.
* Access GP Browser and other 3rd party systems to support care and navigation of patients.
* Support rapid resolution of IT and system access related issues.
* Support GPs to find service information and contact details including ensuring practice resources are updated.
* Initial completion of child protection reports for GP completion.
* Completion of Crem Forms to be sent to Funeral Home.
* Completion of Coroner Reports
* Completion of TWIMC Letters for patients
* Completing basic (non-opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for GPs to approve and sign-off such as insurance forms, mortgage forms, benefits agency forms etc.
* Prepare patient details for practice meetings including reviewing cases for presentation.
* Take minutes, log and track actions of practice clinical meetings.
* Undertake chaperoning duties.
* Sorting all clinical post and prioritising for the GP in terms of actions. Signposting some post to others such as clinical pharmacist etc.
* Extracting all information from clinical letters that needs coding and adding to notes.

Recognised degree qualification in autonomous practice


Experience

Works within General Practice

Service level role with patients

Working within a multidisciplinary team

Using different IT software

Basic knowledge of English and Mathematics


Knowledge

Infection control principles

Participation in annual individual performance review, including taking responsibility for maintaining a record of own personal and/or professional development

Taking responsibility for own development, learning and performance and demonstrating skills and activities to other who are undertaking similar work

Attend all relevant annual updates

Inform the lead GP of any concerns regarding GPA role and any professional development needed
