Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a Band 6 Deputy Dental Nurse Manger to join the Maxillofacial and Dental team. To provide effective expertise, advice and support to all ward/department teams and ensure the provision of high-quality care to children, young people and their families on a fixed term 1 year secondment. Providing high standards of clinical care and support to all staff grades. The role involves the preparation and maintenance of the clinical areas including stocks of materials and equipment and collecting and inputting data into the patient administration system. Ensuring the safe, effective and efficient management of the department within allocated resources. Undertaking delegated responsibility for the unit in the absence of the Dental Nurse Manager.

To be considered for this role you must be a registered Dental Nurse with excellent clinical skills with relevant background in Dental Nursing. It is essential to have demonstrable experience of taking charge of a Dental clinical unit and show qualities of a team leader and role model.


Main duties of the job

* We are looking for an individual who is ready for the next move in their career and demonstrates a desire to deliver a positive patient experience, actively involved in the support of the future developments of the service and promotes the effective flow of patients through the department.
* You will have support and opportunity to work closely with the department manager, assistant service managers, and service manager
* To provide clinical co-leadership to the dental nursing team and ensure the provision of high-quality dental nursing care to children and families.
* To act as a role model and expert clinical practitioner.
* To assist in the safe, effective and efficient management of the department within allocated resources.
* To promote a progressive attitude to the continual improvement of patient care through research and evidence-based practice.
* To undertake delegated responsibility for the department in the absence of the Department Manager.
* To be familiar with and adopt the principles of the NHS Chief Nursing Officers vision for Compassion

Academic/Professional qualification/Training


Essential criteria

* Registered Dental Nurse (national certificate of dental nursing or GDC accepted equivalent)
* Evidence of ongoing dynamic continuing professional development within the specialty linked to demonstrable clinical competencies
* Post Qualification Certificate in Sedation/Implantology/Radiography


Desirable criteria

* Leadership or management training /attendance on a clinical leadership programme


Experience/Knowledge


Essential criteria

* Experience of handling clinical incidents and complaints
* Thorough specialty knowledge relevant to the department
* Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s dentistry
* Understanding of audit and research methodologies
* Understanding of resource management, health and safety, clinical risk and quality issues
* Handling safeguarding issues according to Trust policies
* Take part in regular appraisals
* Awareness of equality and diversity
* Knowledge of clinical governance, safety, and Infection control
* Expert knowledge in identifying safeguarding issues


Desirable criteria

* Demonstrable experience of taking charge of a department and deputising for the department Dental Sister.
* Previous experience of research and audit
* Experience of problem solving and escalating
* Knowledge of national nursing and children’s agenda
* Knowledge of Evidence based dentistry tool kit for prevention
* Previous experience in the relevant specialty of post (preferably in an NHS setting)

* Interest in caring for patients with complex Orthodontic, Paediatric and Maxillofacial needs
* Excellent verbal and written communication skills
* Able to problem solve and initiate change
* Able to work across professional team and organisational boundaries

* Able to enthuse, motivate and involve individuals and teams
* Demonstrates compassion in practice
* Excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritise own workload and that of others
* Evidence of experience working with a wide range of dental procedures


Desirable criteria

* Excellent leadership and organisational skills
* Excellent teaching, training, and preceptorship skills
* Ability to work with an Electronic Patient Integrated Care record system
* Administration of inhalation sedation
* Perform intra-oral scanning on patients
* Set up and assist with Dental implant surgery
