Enablers editor (maternity cover), the bureau of investigative journalism

London
Journo Resources Limited
Investigative journalist
€52,500 a year
Posted: 10 November
Offer description

The Bureau of Investigative Journalism is looking for an experienced, dynamic and ambitious editor to lead its Enablers team. This will be a fixed term maternity cover. It’s a fantastic opportunity to lead a high-performing team which in the past five years has delivered explosive exposés of the UK’s role in facilitating corruption and wrongdoing around the world. The flow of dirty money and how it undermines democracy and society is one of the burning questions of our time, and it is our job to lift the lid on this with original in-depth reporting.

The Bureau’s Enablers team has exposed the dealings of the rich and powerful, and the professional class which serves them. Investigations have appeared in the biggest national newspapers and in publications around the world, including front page splashes in the New York Times and Sunday Times. More importantly, our reporting has met the Bureau’s core mission of achieving real-world impact. Our investigations with the BBC and Guardian into Roman Abramovich’s tax affairs led to criminal charges for company directors in Cyprus; meanwhile a partner at Carter-Ruck is being prosecuted at tribunal over an alleged threat to sue the victim of a scam, which was first revealed by our reporting.

We aren’t interested in being just another team reporting in this space. We pursue underreported topics in a person‑centred way, showing the impacts of wrongdoing on real people. We do stories that will be accessible and relevant to a broad UK audience – not just those who follow finance and corruption news.

We’re looking for someone who can get stuck in at all stages of the editorial process, supporting the team’s two reporters as they deliver important major investigations while ensuring that ongoing work fits in with the team’s existing strategy. You will also be responsible for ensuring our investigations achieve maximum impact, not just by sometimes partnering with established outlets but by considering the levers of change and how our work can pull on them. And you will need to make sure there is a steady stream of quicker stories relevant to the Bureau’s audience.

The Bureau is also in the process of an ambitious project to grow its audience. You don’t need special experience of newsletters or video/audio production, but you’ll need to be willing to learn. We want to engage our audience on the platforms where they’ll be, so be ready to jump on TikTok or speak on a podcast when each of the team’s stories go out.

Responsibilities

* Lead a three‑person team delivering hard‑hitting and impactful investigations – this includes providing a high standard of well‑structured management
* Ensure the effective delivery of several big, ambitious projects which will already be underway when you take on the post
* Guide the team’s reporting and ensure it is robust
* Oversee the team’s impact strategy and deliver impact tasks in the absence of the team’s usual impact producer (who will be on leave for most of the period)
* Edit copy and oversee a rigorous fact‑checking and right‑of‑reply process, and identify any legal or other risks involved
* Conceive of and deliver innovative output that reaches a broad range of audiences – this goes well beyond investigations
* Produce or contribute to social media, podcast and video output
* Help meet our ambitious diversity, equity and inclusion targets across our journalism, personnel and policies
* Manage reporting partnerships with freelancers and other outlets
* Oversee project budgets, with support from our Finance team
* Support the Development team in producing funder applications, reports and budgets
* Represent the Bureau at events, conferences and in the media.

You’ll be a good fit if:

* You are ambitious and passionate about your work, and are able to put the public interest of your journalism first
* You can show that you are deeply interested in enablers of corruption and know who the major players are
* You have at least five years’ experience of leading investigations – ie coming up with story ideas and following leads, handling robust evidence, developing contacts and protecting vulnerable sources
* You have a rigorous understanding of the methods and techniques of investigative journalism, from data and FOI to cultivating human sources
* You are diligent with right‑to‑reply and legal processes. You should have an excellent understanding of media law and journalism ethics
* You are able to edit copy to a high standard
* Your leadership style is collaborative and you are excited about the idea of being a facilitative leader for this investigative team rather than a top down one. You align with the Bureau’s management values to be open and communicating, developing and solution‑focused
* You believe in journalism’s role in making a difference. You think journalism organisations have to take a more active role in ensuring their work is heard and sparks change
* You are willing to take creative risks on new ideas, including innovative ways of telling stories that are often complex and hard for people outside the City of London to follow
* You consider how diversity and equity issues are relevant to this area and have ideas which go beyond the tokenistic on how to address this.

You don’t need to tick every box in this ad – we are committed to hiring people with potential. If you feel like you lack some specific experience but have the necessary drive and passion, please don’t be deterred from applying.
