Role Title: Engineer - Radiation Physics

Location: Derby, Manchester, Warrington

We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we’re doing something that’s never been done before. We’re revolutionising an industry. That’s a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy.

We are now recruiting for the exciting role of Engineer - Radiation Physics, to be involved in industry leading, cutting-edge design project for a new type of power station.

The Performance & Analysis team is the centre of excellence within Rolls-Royce SMR (RR SMR) for the engineering analysis used to substantiate the performance and safety of the power station. Radiation Physics and Shielding (RP&S) analysis is a key tool for supporting the design and development of the RR SMR, as we must design and substantiate radiation shielding and radiological zoning to ensure ALARP dose to workers and the public and support a broad range of other technical disciplines with inputs derived from our analysis work.

The Engineer – Radiation Physics will be responsible for the technical and programme delivery of RP&S work packages across the power station, acting as both a technical author and, for suitable packages of work, reviewer for RP&S analysis. The role will involve working alongside the design, layout, and E3S teams to determine suitable analysis requirements and scope of RP&S analysis packages to support progressive design but ultimately verify the performance and safety of the final RR SMR design and support justification of an ALARP position.

The applications of RP&S analysis to support the RR SMR are broad, with some of the key scenarios and technical disciplines this role would support being: Radiation shielding and dose rate assessments, dose assessments for normal operations, generation of gamma and neutron flux and fluence data, Displacements per Atom (DPA) assessments, gamma heating assessments, detector response assessments, neutron activation assessments, radioactive source term generation, manipulation, and decay calculations, decay heat, burn-up and depletion calculations, support to radiological consequence calculations, support to Equipment Qualification studies (EQ), and support to radiation protection safety case activities.

Due to the safety-critical nature of the modelling we undertake, excellent quality-management processes are essential. The development of robust and automated analysis routes around the analysis codes, including clear documentation of pre/post-processing scripts (in Python) and the use of our high-performance computing resources is an important aspect of this.

As RP&S analysis supports the development and substantiation of many aspects of the power station design, effective communication and collaboration with teams across a wide range engineering and non-engineering disciplines is essential. Staff should be flexible to the evolving nature of the ongoing design programme and proactive in collaborating with other teams in developing analysis requirements and communicating results.

Key Results & What can be achieved in the role

After the first year at RR SMR:

* You will understand the activities performed by the RP&S team and be comfortable working independently to deliver RP&S analysis, with a good comprehension of the required governance and quality procedures relevant to your work.
* You will have grown and developed within a team of engineers who are enthusiastic about the project and keen to work together, supporting colleagues within and external to the team.
* You will be working to a strategic plan for the area, working with internal and external capability, maximising delivery whilst maintaining a healthy work/life balance.
* You will have supported the business in meeting the definition maturity gates, delivering Step 3 of GDA, and in securing orders.

Longer term, you will support RR SMR to become a centre of excellence for radiation physics and shielding analysis.

Confidence can sometimes hold us back from applying for a job. But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as a 'perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.

Also, if you are considering a career move or a sector-jump, please get in touch, we welcome applications from people with transferable skills.

Key Selection Criteria

Radiation Physics and Shielding

* A strong academic background with a BSc (or equivalent) in Physics or another relevant subject and good understanding of radiation transport and other radiation physics.
* Experience of applying a structured and methodological approach to analysis.
* Relevant work experience or training in radiation physics and shielding, including experience with some or all of the following codes: MCNP, Attila/Attila4MC, SCALE.
* Experience in pre-processing (SpaceClaim) and post-screening (Tecplot, Python) activities associated with these codes.
* Attila-Cottonwood, Fornax, and FISPACT-II experience also is desirable.

Delivery of Analysis Methods, Models, and Tools

* Familiarity with processes and governance for delivering high quality level analysis.
* Experience of scoping a proportional level of RP&S analysis to satisfy a set of requirements to support design or safety case.
* Definition and planning of a project/programme of work, including milestones, risks, interfaces, etc.
* Quantification of analysis uncertainties including statistical methods and tool development.
* Clear and concise technical writing and communication, including presentations.

Project Management and Leadership

* Track record of managing requirements and interfaces with a range of technical stakeholders.
* Proven experience of delivering of analysis tasks to time, cost, and quality.
* Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in technical reports, describing complex analysis in a way that is easy to understand.
* Flexible and adaptable in fast paced, evolving design programmes.

Health & Safety and ALARP

* Working with due regard to Health, Safety and Environment to ensure that work complies with all necessary corporate, business and legislative requirements and procedures.
* Putting safety first in everything you do.
* Understanding of the role of radiation physics and shielding analysis in supporting the radiation protection aspects of a safety case.
* Experience making ALARP judgements and arguments in technical output.

Nuclear Industry Domain Knowledge

* Knowledge of radiation physics and transport analysis to support the design of infrastructure and processes for relevant industries such as civil nuclear, medicine, or defence.
* Nuclear-specific knowledge, including the following areas, would be ideal but not essential:
o Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) design, plant, and behaviour.
o Role of radiation physics and shielding analysis in reactor design substantiation and safety case.
o Principles and methodologies applied in analysis of nuclear reactors in normal operation (design basis and best estimate) and faulted conditions.
o Application of As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) and Best Available Technique (BAT) principals for environmental impacts.
o Role of radiation dose calculations in radiological consequence assessments.
